Substrate

mblons Nov 06, 2011 09:58 AM

My own limited personal experience for the last several months using rabbit pellets with my adults is that it is MUCH easier to clean cage by simply removing the clumped pellets that got moisture. The pellets can be burrowed in and the snakes seem comfortable on the pellets. They do not get ingested that I can visualize, they do not get into water like sanichips do and when I get them at a feedstore as I now learn, the price will be manageable. I have noticed that several people who use them wonder why more people do not. I am also thinking the same now.

In my experience, MANY keepers use what is easier for the keeper and not really beneficial for the animal. A snake can look comfortable on a pile of nuts and bolts but it does not mean it is an acceptable substrate.

So what specifically are you trying to say/state Gregg?

Cheap shot Gregg. I expected so much more from you but guess not. To listen to you one would think rabbits pellets were shards of glass. I am sorry that you think I am lazy and care nothing for my snakes but you don't know me as well as I apparently now know you. Do you have a problem with rabbits pellets? Speak up and leave personal attacks to yourself. I spend a lot of care with and I am very passionate about the care of my snakes.

Gregg_M_Madden Nov 08, 2011 05:53 PM

Both of you should know that I do not take cheap shots. If I have something to say to an individual, I spacifically call someone out by name and situation and have no problem doing so.

I was simply suggesting that (as I stated) many keepers use what is convenient for the keeper and not really beneficial for the kept. I use aspen bedding for housing because it is cheap and easy. Does it mean it is any more beneficial for the snake than rabbit pellets? Not at all.

They sure look snug in a pile of aspen but I am certain they would be far more comfortable in a cage with 10 inches of sandy soil with a variety of temperature and humidity levels(hence the pile of nuts and bolts comment). Thats just not convenient for us though, so almost no one keeps their hogs like that especially when keeping them in breeding colony numbers.

I was not having a go at you guys at all. Just being me as always. I am truely sorry if I came off like a jerk. Troy, you know I respect you highly and Mblons, you will do well with your animals. You can see your passion and love for these animals with every post you make. Your husbandry was never in question.

Hey Gregg, I'm totally cool. I never made any accusation or claim that you were taking a cheap shot at me nor my husbandry skills. I merely asked you to clarify your statement which was unclear as to the point you were trying to make.

When I said this:

"Gregg's going to have his own opinions based on what works for him which doesn't make him right nor wrong. I always take a grain of salt whatever Gregg happens to say knowing that everybody has their own methods and ideologies about keeping animals within artificial environments."

I was merely stating that you act, like most of us, independently as to what works specifically for you and you alone and that I also do the same, hence the "grain of salt" part of the comment. When I stated that specifically about you, it was merely because I know how fervent you are about what works for you and that even though you know what works best for you doesn't necessarily mean it's the right or only way of doing things although your methods are worth acknowledging (as are all of our methods) and trying if applicable.

Cool Troy. I should have been more clear. I just typed my original response in a rushed manor. Looking at it now, I still dont see how it can be looked at as a cheap shot but I can see how mblons might think I was aiming it at him. My post was more of a general statement. So again, sorry to mblons being that you took it as a personal attack. That was not my intent.

Thanks Gregg I responded a bit harshly and we are cool. Keep up the good posts and be well.
