Incubator?

RSedgwick Nov 06, 2011 03:44 PM

I am in the market for a new incubator and hoping to get some good feedback on what you guys are using that is working well. I do not want to take the time to build my own out of a fridge at this time. Any good tips would be appreciated. I have been using a havabator with a plexiglass box inserted in the middle. It is time to get a new incubator.
Thanks,

Robert

i built this 4'x2'x2' sucker, which was derived from a modified plan i got off of john hollister's web page many moons ago. i imagine his page is still up if you're interested.

anyhow this box hatched out more pines than i can remember. if i was still doing it i would have probably gone to a substrate free set up and a little tighter control on air and temps, just to see if i could learn something new. i loved egg incubation, it was my favorite part of the hobby.

the plywood box just goes to show you don't need to spend a bunch to get good results.

I have a couple of big Styrofoam boxes which have hatched snakes, lizards and countless crickets. Above is the snake and lizard hatching box. I heat them with a plant germination mat or a UTH mat, controlled by a thermostat. The vermiculite/perlite medium egg tub sits on top of a baker's rack to keep it off the mat. In the summer when it gets hot I put one of those frozen gel packs in next to the egg tub for awhile to keep the temperature in the right range.

This is great for small operations but if you have many clutches a professional unit might be more convenient.

Back when I bred, I had huge success with using a glass gallon jar, 1/2 to 3/4 full of slightly moist vermiculite ( just enough water mixed in to have the vermiculite clump in your hand ), burying the eggs in it, but leaving a small area exposed on top of the level, placed in an area that provided the appropriate temps.
