Bright green poop - kingsnake

Bolitochrome Nov 06, 2011 07:16 PM

Yep, bright green poop. Not brown-green. Deep, grassy, green poop. The texture and amount is normal, but the entire poop is this strange color.

Example color:

This came from my female kingsnake, but I didn't think odd colored bowel movements would be species-specific. Her diet consists of appropriate sized mice and rats, same as all my snakes. She has been shying away from food recently, but that is typical for this time of year for her. Temps are 88 to 74 degrees F. Substrate is cypress and aspen. Water is always available, dish is cleaned once a week.

My question: WTH? Does anyone know the cause of this? Am I wrong in assuming that this is a problem?

As far as I know, it's normal to happen on occasion. One of my females has one of those about once or twice a year lol. If the poop is still bright green the next time she poops, that would be some cause for concern. Just watch her carefully to be on the safe side.

Sometimes when I am low on rats I will feed my snakes Smurfs, they will have these strange blue rubbery feces for a while, but it passes quickly. I would not be too concerned about what comes out of your snake unless it doesnt eventually return to normal or the snake begins to show signs of stress. I have seen a wide array of interesting deposits in my collection and have not ever had any serious developments as a result.
