Winter Quarters

Pit_fan Nov 10, 2011 12:25 PM

A few pics of my "winter quarters" setup for the snakes. First, bought two new wine refrigerators. Then added my own shelving using peg-board. Then put a big hide on each shelf and a large water bowl on the base shelf, plugged the units in, set temps to about 65 initially and then added snakes. Here's the basic shelf setup:

With door open and snakes inside:

With door closed:

Temps now set at 55 with a gradual decrease over a two week period.

Covered each unit with moving blankets to block out any light:

Open the doors a couple of times a week to replenish O2 levels inside. So far, so good! At 55 degrees, the snakes still move between shelves to and from the water bowl. See them back in their tanks around mid February or so.

That looks like a great setup. Glad you decided to not put them in bags so they can get to the water! LOL!

An old pic of my brumation tubs; same thing this year just more snakes hence more tubs. The bedroom floor is cold enough to do the job. I used to hate that bedroom floor area for being so consistently cold until I got snakes and found a use for it.

The bags will serve other purposes later when I need places to put snakes while I'm cleaning tanks, etc. The information exchange on this forum is invaluable. I had a basic idea of what I wanted to do and the input that I got from everyone improved my ideas. Snakes have been down for about two weeks now and I miss them. Still have three 2011 Kankakee Bulls which will be "up" all winter to keep me company.
