HELP! Bearded dragon substrate question

mike7934 Oct 02, 2003 03:25 PM

Hi, I'm getting a bearded dragon on sunday. I have a very important question on substrate. I'm probably going to be getting a young dragon around maybe 4 inches. The substrate I have now is desert blend. It's crushed wallnutshells. Is this a good substrate for a young bearded dragon? Also, I heard that childrens play sand is good too. But i'm really concerned about impaction. Thanks alot.

Mike.

crushed walnut shells is probably the worst, for now until he reaches 10-12 inches keep him on papertowels, newspaper or butchers paper, even shelf liners, anything non particulate that they cannot ingest. then later if you want to put him on sand you can use childrens playsand, look for silica free. sonme people here even use shelf liners for their adults and keep them off sand. i use wheat bran in half the cage where they sleep, burrow play etc and in the other half non slip shelf liners where they eat and poop, it makes for easy cleaning and although i feel bran is safe they still are minimally ingesting the substrate. hope that this helps some.
