LOCALE CAL KINGS GALORE!

shannon brown Nov 24, 2011 02:10 PM

I have spent the last few years beefing up my locale cal king collection.Aside from Kerby nobody else has really taken the reins on "locale" cal kings. My good friend Rick Trenny (R.I.P BUDDY)had a pretty god selection as did a few other people but nothing like I have put together. ok, I will just get with it and let you be the judge.I think I have the largest most diverse cal king collection on earth. And if you happen to have something I don't have and would like to help me expand a litle just let me know. Anyway, I will start with a few black belly morphs that are 100% pure locale animals. this is a killer w/c male from Davis ca.He really has everything going on for him and this is one of my very favorite cali's. He is aberrant, hypermelanistic and has the black belly to boot as well as some of the washboard speckling on his sides. Thanks again Mitch for this little gem. here is a sweet female from the same rock pile. Now keep in mind this is pretty much at the end of there range and not easy to find here.I think Staub or Mulks to me that only about 5% look like this in this area.Farther south the percentage goes way up on visual morphs vs. wild type. here are a couple wild type Davis animals from the same rocks.I should find out next year if any of these turn out to be hets. couple hours south of Davis is Mendoda.About 25 miles away from Mendoda is another sweet little nugget (not going to mention exact locale sorry!). I found this killer little male in (09) and he was just a tiny neonate. Not ten feet away under a little board my best buddy Aaron flipped out this little normal looking female. I had a feeling she may be a het and probably was a clutch mate of my male.Aaron was kind enough to gift her to me for a little project and this year even thouh they where only 18 months old I figured they where big enough to breed.I ended up with just 4 big eggs and sure enough she did turn out het as 2 babies where normal like her and 2 where hyper aberrant black bellies like dad.I lucked out as well cause both of the black bellies ended up being a pair. About 40 miles east we go to Clovis.A great friend of mine was lucky enough to find a trio of adults ( out of about 30 total) that had black bellies and some aberrancies. They aren't as hypermelanistic as some others but I still dig them and they also breed true. And, the small field where they where found is gone now. and here are a couple of there babies. sticking with some black bellies here are a couple Marinas Del Ray animals I am raising up.I have to thank Gary Keesler for these cool guys. [img]http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/803marina_del_ray_male_1.jpgimg] here is a pair that where collecting inside a tire in Freeport. And again,The male is normal and the female hypo but he also turned out to be het as I figured he would. And, this hypo gene is the same one as Merker used to produce from El Dorado county. and here is a couple of there babies. The pic isn't very good but there is 2 hypos in there. here is what they look like from Santa Maria area.Nothing flashy but still cool looking. and not to far away from there is Rancho Santa Margarita.I love the wide bands and the speckling or newsprint. now here is a very rare locale now in the hobby.Newports where all over the hobby years ago but just try and find a true newport animal now days. The female is totally normal and the male is a textbook newport phase and they where both collected in Newport proper. And with this morph its a co-dom gene so half the babies have the newport look and about half come out normal like mom. I guess I don't have a pic of the normal female but she is just black and narrow yellow banded. But here is one of the babies produced from them. now on to some desert phase for a while. These are from my area (Bishop) Inyo County. here are a couple from just north of Bishop about half hour in Mono County. the Mono county animals seem to be higher banded more narrow white bands compared to the Inyo county animals even though they are only miles away from each other. And a little side note,I have only found about a dozen in Mono county in the 35 years that I have lived here. these are from 9-mile cyn in southern Inyo county. here is a "megabanded death valley trio" they are actually from just outside the park byabout 20 miles on the southern end of Panamint valley.Slate Range is the actual locale just 5 miles north of Hoomwood cyn outside of Trona. These are from Kern county out of jawbone cyn just about 15 miles north of Mojave.I really dig the fact that most the males caught here are aberrant and some are almost 50/50. couple Clark county (Nevada) animals. Here are a couple from La Quinta (just outside palm springs). here we have some Palomar cali's.Just outside of San Diego and they are called ghosts because of the way they look instead of there genetics.I believe they are just a type of hypo but there is no anery in the line.Gary Keesler started this line many years ago along with the La Quinta animals. Thanks Gary for knocking out these beauty's. Scissors crossing (Borrego springs area) is one of my favorite. Its known for desert phase striped. this one here is a actual w/c male from there. All the rest in my collection are multi generation. this next pair is from a pair of w/cs so they are just f1s. this pair is like f5 or f6 line bred for wider white by Tim Turmezie. now this is a killer pair that came from a wild caught gravid this year from Mt.Springs (jacoomba)sp?..... I could only get one pic to load today but will post another 3 or 4 of the Mt Springs animals later. a few coastals to look at now, we will start with some from Carlsbad. and just up the road a bit is Oceanside. These are called "grease kings" and are from Long Beach out of the oil fields. Here are a couple w/c's from Barrett lake (San Diego area). And they always throw off some really cool aberrant babies as well as perfect striped and perfect banded etc..... this one probably has some splendida influence in it but its still locale.Old u.s. 80 (arlington az.) and I sure wish I could pair this guy up.He is a baja cal king from San Matias. They used to be all over the hobby in the early to mid 90's but I haven't seen another one in many years. probably my favorite of all the locales I have are these classic "yumanensis" from Brawley area. here is a pair from way northern Ca.Yreka to be exact. whitewater cyn. I have a few other locales but no pics loaded up yet. Pamona douglas az. wilcox az. Kernville vista box springs san marcos Kingman az. hyw 80 just outside Rodeo Morongo Valley and maybe a couple others.LOL.... So, it looks like I have about 50 locales or close to that anyway.I think Im only going to ad about 10 more specific locales and then call it good. I have a handfull of other locale getula as well like some nice speckled kings, splendida, easterns and brooksi.Thats for another post on another day. I hope you enjoyed the little locale treat guys.Have a great Turkey Day. L8r Shannon Brown

Wow Shannon. The san Matias and Scissors Crossings are my favorites. You have quite the collection for sure. So, which locale do you think holds onto the brightest white against black into adulthood?

Joe

shannon brown Nov 24, 2011 11:42 PM

Thanks Joe, I would say the Death Valley kings are the best.Snow white and jet black.Much like the cunjuncta we both have.

My understanding was the long beach oil feild kings are very rare and are also a recessive, is that correct?

Yeah,Hubbs has said they are far and few between.I have never been there myself.

As far as simple recessive I really can't say?I have a trio of Visuals and I know they breed true but I have never tried to out-cross them.

p.s. this pic is of some "blizzards hatching" and they are the product of any given hypermelanistic (chocolate etc....) x albino and its the double homo.

Thanks Ross, you can use any of those pics you want on your site too.

p.s. what do you think of the Elfin forest (blue eyed blondes)?Do you think they are just a hypo or a lav t plus albino or ???

Thanks, Shannon! The BHB's are a really cool morph but kind of confusing. I'd rather put them in the T positive group than the hypo, even though they look hypo as adults. The red eyes makes them too different from the Merker hypos and my hypo, IMO. Maybe they could be called an extreme hypo.

Cool Shannon. I don't have any locale cal kings anymore. Yes I use to have quite a few but I have been downsizing for the past couple of years after my 2 minor heart surgeries. In fact this winter I need to get rid of about 30 more breeders (het for everything LOL) or I will just find a lake somewhere and let them go. And then in about 20 years some weird stuff will be found lol.

You are expanding and I am reducing.

Great stuff!

Kerby... Nov 25, 2011 03:24 PM

You know darn well that the Chino Valley cal kings are butt ugly.

And Shannon is more than welcome to come here and catch a few.
This is the first year that I didn't catch any cal kings in my rodent room, although I did catch 2 gopher snakes trying to get a free meal.

But you did find that road kill cal king in front of my house...........
