Power backup

phiff1 Nov 26, 2011 09:08 AM

Hello all,

I did some searching on this site for suggestions and not sure I found a solution to this yet: here in MA we lost power for a day in the October snowstorm (we got off easy!). I need to find a way to keep my herps warm in future power outages and looking for suggestions. Any ideas? I don't want to get one of those expensive automatic backup generators; just something that could potentially run 6 heat mats and 2 50w halogen bulbs for 2 days if need be.

Thanks in advance and here is a vid of my BRB in our yard from this summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=937DSOJQRFk

Maybe this is a better way to post video links?

Two options I can think of....

1) the more obvious - small gas generator.

2) for short term maybe a power inverter and a car battery? Probably better a deep cycle marine battery and maybe a trickle charger to keep it charged. Should probably do some math to get an idea how long this setup would last before draining the battery. The more drain (cages) the faster the battery will drain.

Too much amperage for a car battery for very many hours. The small generator would be good. The smaller ones are not too expensive. The 40 and 60 and 72 hour heat packs from Ship your reptiles and superior shipping supplies would be a less expensive and possibly easier alternative.

During power outages moving all reptiles into smaller temporary containers to a small well insulated room of the house, to keep them at a decent temperature (not necessary peak but warm enough to be above the minimum night time drop) will do, as long as they had not eaten within a few days before the power outage. If they had been fed, then provide extra eat to ensure a hot spot for them to be. Just make sure they don't risk overheating.

the long lasting shipping heat packs are always good to have on hand for such an emergency. Worse comes to worse, you can just put the snakes in bags and lay them on your stomach while lying down. Your own body heat is more than enough to keep the snakes warm. Good for a few hours, not so good if you fall asleep, don't want to roll ontop of your pets. Especially if you keep venomous snakes.

Watch for sales, as those black and decker gas generators do come on sale time to time. Depending on how big your collection is a small one may be all you need to keep heat pads running. It also doesn't hurt to contact friends or relatives who live other side of town or a nearby town which may be far enough away should the power outage be local (unlike say that major power outage about ten years ago or so which took out most of Eastern US and up into Canada.)

There was a guest chat last year or the year before about how to prepare for emergencies like power outages etc, which should be in the archives. It wasn't a reptile specific chat but for all pets. Useful transcript to listen/read.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like I should probably get a small generator. In the last outage last month there was nowhere in our house above 60 f and that was during the day. I assume the animals would not have survived the night temp drop no matter how well insulated an area of the house might be, so I am going to need a back up heat source.

I haven't found the chat on emergency heat plans on this site but will keep searching.

For those of you who have used generators in the past, have you left them running all night while you slept? Any reason not to do this? I figure I will have to find one that is not too loud in order to not upset the neighbors.

thanks again for the responses,

Chris

I live in CA and typically it's not that cold. For the few outages We've had I use my motorhome generator to run my entire house (except the 220V appliances). Pretty cool to have the only house on the entire block with lights, heat and even cable TV.

It's a pretty quiet generator and for the most part I run it for a few hours at a time and not run it all night. Trust me, if it's that cold, I'd run it all night and the neighbors would not care as they would all be inside bundled up.

If the neighbors are without power and hear your generator they will be your best friends and want to plug in their coffee pots. BTW, these snakes can do okay for a couple days with temperatures down around 60.

Good point about the neighbors Jeff.

I know things will get below 60 in the house up here in New England if we lose power for any length of time this winter, but good to know in general.

If you do get a genny for use in case of emergency, you should have a strong method of securing it. No sense in supplying some scumbag with a new genny when your snakes need the heat to help them survive.

Hey Cliff, I'd be careful about giving a big dog a gun. Without first giving your dog proper firearm safety training, that could be a dangerous combination
