F1 Brooksi progression

foxturtle Nov 28, 2011 03:27 PM

A few of the F1 brooksi I produced this year are really beginning to take off and are already showing a lot of lightening.

The only male from the first clutch, which ended up producing snakes with a lot of red coloration. These look nicer as hatchlings, but I expect them to be dirtier as adults

At first shed (August 2011):

A male I held back from clutch 2 because he was the largest in the clutch. The snakes from this clutch came out with almost zero red/orange coloration. While not as striking as hatchlings, I expect them to make brighter/cleaner adults.

The sand kings are all still pretty dark. It took my holdbacks over a year before they really looked like anything special.

Very nice Nick. It is nice to see some true blue stock. My sand kings are eating machines. They even eat while in blue. All of them!! LOL. I thought my easterns were eating machines , but these things put them to shame.

Very nice Nick. It is nice to see some true blue stock

Well they didn't come from Blue (Bluerosy) stock but they are no more pure than the triple homo that CBI recently posted which comes directly from unoutcrossed Wildcaught S. Florida locale.

In those the original New England axanthic stock was used.
In those the original Peanut butter stock was used.
In those the original hypo Love stock purchased in 1994 was used.

So unless you want to argue what purity is again...?

Was not aimed at you rainer, or anyone else for that matter, and I don't think I have ever argued purity of your stock. Just admiring his snakes and know Nick has some w/c parent stock or f-1's---ect. I myself like good examples of snakes from their ranges. Of course after line breeding for a while they get much cleaner

What ever homo stuff you and Jeremy are working with doesn't come close to Nicks stuff. Remember, you have all the obsoleta white sided kings in the mix. That makes them hybrids and not even close.

People have asked me for non-het/locale brooks for years. Others have asked me for brooksi that look more like the ones that were around during the 80s.

I'm not saying mine are any more pure than axanthic/hypo/pb stock... after all, those are just recessive traits which. My stock was collected by myself and friends in the past couple years. All the offspring at this point are first generation, and are not known to be het for anything. This all lends to the perception that they have a close connection to their wild counterparts.

Personally, I just find collecting and breeding my own stock to be rewarding.

Fox,
There is nothing wrong with what you are doing and if people wnat w/c stcock there is nothing wrong with that. Just that 15-20 years ago you could not have found anyone who cared for these animals, why??. because (today) herpers are less likely to go out and seek their own snakes and instead buy them from the internet. Evrrything is fast fast... So we get a lot of armchair herpers. I bet if they actually did some field work these kings would not get as much interest.

Also don't forget we sued to only be able buy wildcaught stock from pet dealers and reptile distributers. They had batches of floridas, eastern , milsnakes , you nname it ect. I remember the first time i saw goini. They were all w/c adults sitting in a tank at a reptile warehouse.

I would have liked to seen a tub full WC of goini.

Actually it they were at a downtown Los Angerles warehouse distrubuter of reptiles . A lot of what these places had was w/c stuff back then. which was shipped off to various pet shops around the country.

Brian Hubbs called me and told me there were some goini there and asked me to go with him. He was excited about seeing them. Me, not so much. I barely gave them a glance. I was more interested their rosys and w/c sinaloan milks and such.

You see everything came from the wild back then. So it was no big deal. Cause that all we had.

I worked for Importers for years. I have seen so much cool and crazy stuff. Kings were all available cb after I got into this stuff. You stop seeing WC stuff when cb is everywhere. I would buy every WC goini or meansi I see now. That's the one snake I need to get. I'm just waiting for WC or f1's to pop up. Next season should be it. Then I have all the eastern getula either WC or f1 from WC.

I would be very interested to know what all the localities and varieties of WC and F1 kings you are working with. I work with locality alterna, wild-type mexicana and pyros primarily and pretty much all of it except the Mexican stuff is traceable to wc. I have my hand full with what I've got so I probably won't be getting into the getula anytime soon but they intrest me greatly and I'm glad that some people are working with the wild-type locality specimens.

Just from looking at posts I get the impression that the wild-type brooksi phase has narrower crossbars and a higher number of crossbars than most other regular Florida kings. Is that true?

No they come in all variety of patterns. Nick mesa has a website with w few varities. he is a poster here.

Here is a sulfur Florida king from Nicks website:

here is his website:
www.brooksi.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=6

You are talking about the old classic brooksi phase which is almost extinct from the hobby. 10-20 years ago they were still plentiful. But for some reason developent or ants or something is making them dissapear. Some even suggested that released northern floridana interbreeding with the s. Floridas is the culprit.
