Tattooing a Snake

pyromaniac Nov 29, 2011 09:50 AM

Okay, a silly question: can you tattoo a snake? My partner asked this, and I thought no, but then am not sure.

Why tattoo a snake at all? ID in case of theft, I suppose, like with dogs.

We tattooed all the primates at the zoo I worked for. People are tattooing fish now too. Google it!

Pit tag the snakes, that way it does not interfere with the looks in any way. Any Vet can do it, and my bet is its far less expensive. Cheers

I looked into pit tags some time back. I think they are a great idea especially for people wanting to document lineage. When I looking into them the cost was ~$2 per tag and insertion is easily accomplished though some locals may require it to be done by a veterinarian.

The problem comes in developing a standard by which the tag numbers are recorded. Additionally readers are somewhat expensive. At less then a grand they aren't too expensive for someone who is going to use it routinely but its not an item most people are going to have in their tool box.

Just looked again. Before taxes and shipping expense you're looking at $2.40 per snake $1.40 for the tag and $1 for the implanter. The real cost would come with actually registering the snake to someone who had the software license and made the data base available.

If you have a vet do it, they will give pt# then record the nunber and they have a reader. They do that for dogs and birds and reptiles. Cheers

Anyone can actually do it. I have on several occasions, as well as turtles and my iguanas.

The chip itself costs around 10 bucks to most people such as breeders, rescues, such as myself, get it for $5

Strange. I don't think they could tattoo a snake. Most people wouldn't want to touch one.

Yeah, my mom used to tattoo the AKC registration numbers on the inner thigh of many peoples dogs back in the 70's and 80's before ID chips came around. Her entire life revolved around show dogs like you wouldn't even believe man.

Since there are so many other things that are pretty off-topic getting posted, here is just one of the many countless champion showdogs my mom has produced in her long lifetime showdog career that was sold as a young puppy to a good friend in Alaska to be shown. I actually own the best Miniature Whire-haired Dachshund of the same litter "Pablo" is from when my mom passed away back in April 2006 (rest her soul). But I have zero interest in the dogshow thing, and just have "Das Tropen BugKing Bronco" (Bucky) strictly as my little buddy part of my close family.

Her long champion bloodline all started from a German import that was (believe it or not) THE winningest Dachshund of all time in the entire world in 1969 that went by the kennel name of "CH. Wilheen's Winnie of Way-Hi". I have this dogs dogshow "BEST in SHOW" photo from 1969 and the oil painting portrait of her here as well.

When my mom passed away, there was an entire dogshow dedicated to her memory and feature a "parade of champions" that many other people had of her "Das Tropen" bloodline legacy that were featured one at a time as their short stories were narrated by an AKC judge.

Anyway, this only just scratches the surface of what she was in the professional dog world out there because she started in Standard Schnauzers and produced and finished many champion dogs there too, as well as was a professional dog handler for other peoples dogs too. In her carrer she also taught obedience class, was a show judge, chairperson for the "South Florida Dachshund Club of America", and for many years had a specialty dog grooming shop that specialized in the proper show-grooming of all terrier dogs called "the Terrier Trimmer". I remember people would actually travel from out of state to go to Ft. Lauderdale to get their showdogs groomed because nobody else had the knowledge of being able to do all of the different show-coats of all the different terrier breeds.

Anyway, here is just one of her many champion bloodline that now resides in Alaska and completed it's championship.

Sorry for the long post, but it doesn't even begin to portray how deeply involved and well-known my mom was in the dog world.

What would you tattoo on a snake? A picture of a human?? Sorry, couldnt resist!! Seriously, I could see a tattoo as an ID device in lieu of a chip implant.

markg Nov 29, 2011 02:01 PM

I would like a kingsnake with a tattoo of a ball python.

pikiemikie Nov 29, 2011 02:59 PM

Tattooing would hurt to much. Would be torture on the snake. Mike B.

I concur! Ouch! Is why I have no tattoos myself! What I was wondering is can a snake be tattooed or will the tattoo be lost the next time the snake sheds?

Yes, you have to get it tattooed every two weeks or everytime it sheds.

LOL! Of course not. Tattoo means permanenet. Otherwise just use a magic marker.

After further Googling of this topic I have concluded that eventually the tattoo would disappear as the snake shed multiple times. All sorts of scars on snakes seem to vanish over time.

I would not ever do this to a snake, it would be very cruel.

If this was feasible it would give a whole new dimension to whether a particular snake is a morph or what? You could tattoo the Star and Stripes on a snake...endless silly possibilities. Better to just Photoshop it...in fact, I would like to see some Photoshopped snake fantasies! I have an image but it is not good enough so far.

with a patternless white albino. Tattoos go deep in the skin so they could stay. They do it on fish I guess they could do it on a snake.
