Still copulating??

balldude Oct 02, 2003 04:47 PM

I just found this today and started wondering. This pair of ball pythons have been copulating since november, why are they still going at it and does this show any sign of infertility? The female shows no signs of pregnancy, neither has she ovulated. Is the male just still trying to stimulate her to ovulate? Thanks, Brian.

I would look at a few reasons as to why she has not "accepted" the male. First off did you cycle the animals? If not you may never get any babies. I know alot of people have hatched healthy babies without cycling, but the reason for cycling is the cool period helps the male produce viable sperm, as well as stimulate both sexes. Without viable sperm, the male can breed all he wants, with no positive results. Also what is the weight on your female? I have had small females breed, but never produce any eggs. I blame this on small size and/or immaturity on her part. Also sometimes a "pair" just never produces together. I have seen this in other species, but usually copulation does not occur, so this is probably not the problem. Hope this helps. It might not be any of these things, just wanted to point them out.
