Diagnosing Fecals - Life-Cycle Window?

jmartin104 Oct 02, 2003 05:25 PM

I have a rescue that has been tested twice by two different vets and the results were negative. We are fairly certain the animal has internal parasites so she was given panacur and flagyl 3x 2 weeks apart.

The fecal is still runny so I had it tested today. My vet says she has parasites and needs panacur and albon. I asked how the snake could negative at the beginning of August and now pop positive. She said it's not always easy to see the parasites because of the eggs and life cycle, or something along those lines. Does that sound right?

Yep. That's why you should always run another fecal 2 or threee weeks after a negative result if you have some reason to suspect parasites. The parasites may or may not be shedding eggs at any given point in time. Sometimes they seem to be triggered by something such as feeding. At any rate, If I suspect parasites because of mucousy stools, weight loss, or whatever, I will wait a couple of weeks if I get a negative , then run another one. Usually if they are present, they will show up in 2 fecals two or three weeks apart.
