Need to Brumate Female Pacific?

pyromaniac Dec 04, 2011 09:47 AM

I have a female Striped Pacific gopher snake that is going to be big and old enough to breed in spring 2012. she is not brumating but is instead eating well. My Blotched Pacific male is in brumation now with his mate. He is the only male I now have for her. I would like to mate him with her but need to know how important it is to brumate the females as well as the males.

Great, you got one of your stripers back? According to W.P. Mara (1994), "Captive snakes of the genus Pituophis cannot be induced to breed unless they first undergo a brief period of artificial hibernation." He then goes on to state that there are many reported exceptions to the above statement but he preferred not to take such chances. Sounds like a stacked deck in favor of brumation.

Yeah, I got the female back. My friend is still looking for the male, which is somewhere in his house, having escaped in the colubrid room. He is dismantling the room and hopefully the little bugger will show up!

I will postpone plans to breed her next spring. She is eating up a storm and putting on some real growth. If she had gone off feed like most of my others I would have brumated her.
