My boa hates hide boxes...is this normal

darkserpent213 Dec 08, 2011 11:32 AM

I've had a dumeril's boa for about 11 years now and she was raised on using a hide box. Then she got big and we had to put her into a new, larger tank. At first I thought a hide box would take up too much room in her tank so she was without one for awhile. She never seems stressed and is very, very calm when I handle her. Now we just put her in a large vision tank (big enough where a hide box would fit perfectly) and I found two excellent extra large hide boxes from reptilebasics.com and put them in the tank. She will stick her head in it then just lift the whole thing up and move it all over the tank. Somedays I wake up and she has it flipped over or jam it up against the top of the tank. Its almost like it just gets in her way and she wants it out of there. This has been going on for over a week now, so im just gonna take it out since she is fine without one. I thought she was going to love it, but I guess not. Do you guys have any snakes that don't feel the need for a hide box?

My boa is too big for hides, so what I do to give her privacy is cover 1/2 of the front glass with construction paper. She spends 90% of her time behind it.

I've always thought about doing it, I think i'll give that a try just as an experiment. Did you cover the warm side or the cool side of the tank?

I cover the warm side.
