Stud Fees...

JohnZ Oct 02, 2003 07:03 PM

Was just wondering if there is such a thing. I see and hear about it every now and then. I am guessing most of the time it happen locally between 2 breeders. Also, seems like a new small breeder would want to do it if he owns a morph and can not afford the mate. So i ask the question.

What would be a fair trade to stud a Ball. Lets say i got a female Albino and want to have a male Albino breed with her, what would be a fair deal? Or even a Piebald female?

I was hoping to hear from some people who do it? What their thoughts or an idea on deals that would be fair to both parties.

Thank you very much... JAZ

with corns and colubrids I would take 20% of the kids......if I had to hatch the eggs and all I would take another 20%..unless I liked them or I didn't get alot of eggs from their female......

.....with more $$$$$$ morphs in balls.......it will be a whole different ballgame........

...........have fun

???????you say if YOU ave a pied or albino FEMALE???

buy the male first............

Yes, i have a Female 100% Het Piebald weighing in at 850 grams(so hoping for next year with her) and got a 2003 Albino female(from Jamie Quick)(he is holding till over 100 grams, she is now just over 85 grams), so hoping for late, late next year.

I got 3 normal females right now at 1100, 1240, and 1320 grams(give or take a few grams) but all of them are going with my male Pastel, he is proven from last year(another breeder) and now weighs 920 grams.

I do have a male 100% het Piebald, but he is just at 160 grams.

So i just wanted to get an idea on what i can do to get a ball or 2 to stud my girls. So that is why i asked... JAZ

I bet your male het pied can be ready next year with your female het pied. Remember the males don't need to be nearly as big.

It's hard to say what is standard as not that many people do breeding loans.

If the animals are close to the same value I've heard of an even split with the person hosting the breeding getting first pick of one, then the other person picks one, and so on (so the host gets any odd balls or extras).

For a much more valuable male I've offered normal girls in exchange for one pick of the litter. There might need to be a clause about minimum clutch size to get that one pick so that the owner of the valuable male (who is also hosting the breeding) gets well rewarded for his trouble. He could of course get his own normal females but people are starting to realize what good (2,000 - 3,000 gram) proven breeder females in ready to go condition are worth and they can be hard to come by on short notice. Seems like a win/win arrangement to me.

There is also the issue of guaranteeing healthy and parasite free animals. Per my recent experience with pre breeding loan fecal exams I’m thinking parasites may even be common in captive breed collections (I heard of some reliable het albino females arriving full of tapeworms). I figure a $15 fecal exam is a realistic minimum requirement but am not sure what sort of quarantine protocol would be sufficient.
