No type-o, it's not called a Florida prairie king. SubSPECIES means it's different. Is the DNA different between the three different species? If it is they a not the same.

Hold it now Gerard...
They are all Lampropeltis calligaster....

Lampropeltis calligaster rhombomaculata = Mole King
Lampropeltis calligaster calligaster = Prairie King
Lampropeltis calligaster occipitolineata = South Florida Mole King

Yes, that is the 3 different species of calligaster. I'm not debating that. I didn't start this thread to debate that. I wonder what made it turn intomthis??????

If they are the same why isn't just Lampropeltis c. Calligaster for all three species?

I think you are confused.....
Lampropeltis is the genus
Calligaster is the species
Then there are three subspecies under the species calligaster.

Gerard is a believer in the way SFMKs were once classified. They were once separate from calligaster and was lumped into them. They were a separate species........

They were never rhombomaculata nor calligaster...........they were not a geographical range of rhombomaculata that was split into two different subspecies......

I can certainly respect that as I still believe alterna and ruthveni to be mexicana.......lol

What that says is that they are calligaster but they should be their own species. They a completely isolated from the other two species and swap no DNA. I miss read what you were saying. I think what they did to ruthveni applies to occipitolineata. It's a different animal.
