ig threw up!

shortydsm Oct 02, 2003 07:13 PM

Yesterday Porfi "threw up" all over my pillow. And when I picked him up to move him, he did it again. It wasn't that bad, just a foamy, liquid that was pink from the raspberries I gave him earlier. I fed him as normal. The day before, however, he got into my pizza when I went to answer the phone & ate about half a slice. So I am guessing the pizza & the raspberries were the combination that made him sick. Any other reasons why he would have done that? He seems fine today...

In general, when an ig throws up it's a sign of a serious underlaying problem. The standard advice in this case is to take the ig to a vet.

Our Iggi threw up once. We took her to our vet, who said that iguanas usually throw up only if they are poisoned, or have a human hair caught in their throat. Fortunately for us, their was another reason. We had been giving her mixed vegetables with her greens, and the mixed vegetables had small chunks of potato in it. The vet X rayed Iggi, and said that a loop of intestine had become twisted, and she could not pass her food. Gas build up from the potatoes had caused her to vomit. The vet wanted to go in surgically, and untwist the loop of intestine. We asked if their was any medicines to give her that might work first. Our vet said to try Mylacon liquid gas medicine for children. It worked! Iggi recovered, and has never had another incident. We stopped giving her any potatoes or corn in her food. I recommend to get your ig to a reptile vet ASAP, just in case it is one of the other reasons, or some foreign object blocking your igs intestines.

He is eating & pooping regularly now so I'm hoping he's ok. The only bad thing about bringing him to the vet is that it's his breeding season right now & he is really mean & won't let me near him (except the day when he was "sick" now he's back to his grumpy, orange ways). I called my herp vet & she's out of the office until tomorrow so I will call back then...

She is sweet, even through both times of being gravid. All she did was want to go outside, and roam around alot.
