how much to feed baby hondos?

varanid Dec 12, 2011 04:50 PM

I sold off a few het for various florida kings at the last show I went to, and got some hypo hondo babies (2, unsexed) as well.

Anyhow, my usual for baby colubrids is 2x/week with one-two prey animals. If it seems like the animals are getting sluggish or frequently not finishing meals (when offered multiple smaller prey) I cut down.

Is 2x/week with 1-2 prey animals of normal (1-1.5x the girth of the snake) prey animals good for these? They're really pretty. I just wanted them and it was the end of the show so I asked what he'd take for them and it was really reasonable...and they were so so so pretty. I've never really worked with milks, at all, before. But these are frigging stunning and hte price was good (the vendor had a lot of really pretty baby colubrids and didn't want to take them all home--I thoguht about getting an albino tangerine too but decided not to).

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

They're maybe 10" long. They just ate 2 pinkies for me. Photos are post-feed

I think that's good but would try and move up to fuzzies when possible. A lot of keepers/breeders go with multiple pinkies which is fine but I personally think it's good to switch up with some larger single meals. The larger mice give them more muscle and bone as opposed to just fatty pinkies all the time.
Nice looking babies by the way.

I'd say that sounds like a perfectly good feeding program. From the pics they don't look over stuffed at all. Probably would easily eat 3 at a time. I'll bet they are longer than 10" as well. Most hondos are 12 to 16 inches at hatching. They are quite beautiful!. Congrats.

Pretty much how I feed all my milks(with the exception of my adult Black Milk) including my new baby hondo and abnorma... roughly every 3 to 3 1/2 days they take 2 prey items.

I picked up a pair of polyzona last year along with another Black Milk and they're still feeding on 2 prey items every 4 days... I might have to up the feeding schedule or number of items offered as they tear right through the current offerings... I'm minutes away from feeding them now.

Your schedule seems fine... if they eat with gusto feed them more or more often... you're doing just fine with them the way you're doing it, keep it up and enjoy them.

The only experience I have with milks is pet sitting the class milk (Honduran I *think*) back in jr. high...so it's been a very very long time

I look forward to working with these, they're really purty I'll swap 'em to fuzzies in the next 3-4 weeks. All the fuzzies I have are pretty big (nearly hopper sized) so I want them to grow a bit more first.
