Off Topic: Spousal Abuse!

I set up a big 106 quart tub November 21 with 8 new female mice and one new male. This morning I removed the male as he was biting the tails of all the females. I saw blood on the wall by the feeding basket the other day while doing cage washing, and upon examining all the mice saw that he was the only one with an unscathed tail. Also of the females only a couple barely show any signs of pregnancy. Again this morning there were fresh signs of this bad behavior. Since removing him the females have all relaxed. The poor little things! In all the years I have been keeping mice this is a first. The mean ass little bugger! He has a date with my gopher snake today.

I think you are doing the right thing, and just starting over again, possibly with a different strain of mice might be the solution. I often see males beat the tar our other males, but not usually females. Sounds like he got what he deserves...Vic

He was an anomaly in my large colony of many generations, but just to be on the safe side I will not hold back any of his young as future breeders. Although I doubt he impregnated many of these females; will leave them be and see what develops. They are most happy to be rid of him.

I recently got some new breeders from a friend who does raptor rescue, and stand to get some Swiss Websters from another friend, just to add new genes to my colony. My colony of a couple hundred mice is very robust with the males doing a great job being mates and parents, and no cannibalism or other bad behavior by anybody. But it is always good to infuse new genes.

Ot still, I have to wonder how is it good to infuse new genes???

As a small scale mouse breeder, oh about 10,000 head(adults) I am not sure why that would be good. Thanks
