sexing my snakes

andersen Dec 15, 2011 10:26 PM

i have been trying to use the popping method and i think to the best of all the information i have accessed that i am doing it correctly. My problem is sometimes i can tell its a definite male with the hemipenis obviously protrudes from the vent however sometimes when i thing they are female there are red spots where the hemipeni usually protrude and a white liquid comes from them like sperm possibly.I am wondering if these are merely glands or if they are maybe hemipeni that are not popping out

The females will have glands that do emit a white fluid, but mistakes have been made by even the most experienced popper. Probing is really the best method. When they pop it's obviously a male, but when they don't there is always a small doubt.

I usually pop 3 seperate days over the course of 2 weeks, each "session" doing it 2-3 times. Obviously as soon as I know I've got a male i stop, but if one makes it through that and still looks to be a female then i'm 99% sure it is. mistakes do happen though and I never have more than 50-70 babies a year so i've got plenty of time to play with the little guys and figure them out.

I don't trust myself probbing the really small ones... hands are too shaky and i feel they are too delicate. with popping i'll start very gently and work my way up over a couple rolls of the thumb so i know i'm not using any more pressure than neccesary.

I just got a shipment of 4 baby European Grass snakes. When I popped them I would have swore I had 4 females. But after probing I know I have 1.3. Those things don't have anything to brag about, lol.
