Gen. Breeding Question

KingDome Dec 23, 2011 10:42 AM

First question:

I have a Cal King, black with a white stripe down it's back. The underside is black and white checkered board. If I were to breed this with a Mexican black what is the chances of getting a solid black with a white strip down the back. Just wondering.

slim to none! You'll get a mixed bag of looks. It takes many generations of back breeding and line breeding to finally get the animal you are trying to achieve. That goes for most mixes similar to what you are talking about. Unless you are dealing with a recessive or dominant trait, there's no certaintity of what you'll get. The problem mant see in this is that many un-identifiable, or perhaps unwanted animals are produced as a byproduct.

Thank you. I can see that the byproduct thing could be a problem.

I am trying to figure out what do I want to breed with her. Do I want to get a male that looks just like her and hope more just like her. Cause I really like the what she looks. Or, do I want to go with something different in hopes of getting some neat variations. What ever it is I don't want them to turn yellow.

Thanks again.

Sorry I really need to proof read my stuff before I sent it.

Thank you. I can see that the byproduct thing could be a problem.

My dyslexia is really kicking in today. If you think that is bad you should see me with numbers.

Wht not get a pair of what you are looking for and want from a well known breeder and take it from there? A reputable breeder will more than help you out and answer your questions!

I primarily recommend getting another california king for her.....
Some true Desert Phase animals that stay white into adulthood are usually available on the classifieds......

A nice 50/50 male would be interesting to breed her to......imho.....
