For Christmas, I got a football!

NUCCIZ_BOAS Dec 26, 2011 07:43 AM

Life has been tough on us Bears fans over the last month.... We have watched our season crash n' burn, but I'm still a die-hard football fan.

I work midnights, upon coming home at 7:30 this morning, I find one of my hypo 100% het VPI t-positive female is ovulating! I knew it was coming soon, she's been swollen for weeks, and I knew it was a matter of time. The male has been roaming the cage for a week, pushing the glass looking for a way out. So I knew it was coming soon.

For some reason, all of my ovulations come within 2-3 days of pulling the male out. Once I see the male wants out, I pull him, and bam! ovulation follows. Is this just by coincidence, or is there perhaps some science behind this? Maybe the male being pulled relieves stress for the female and she's more willing?

Just a thought......

Anyways, this female was bred by my VPI motley that I purchased from Jeremy Stone, so with any luck, VPI Sunglow Motleys will be here in the end of April!

And here is the male doing his deed several weeks ago....

I have several more females I'm expecting to ovulate soon. One of them should be in the next week or 2, I'll keep you guys posted!

I'm going to drive myself nuts for the next 4 months watching this girl.... The anticipation may kill me!

Tony

I want a football bad too... but it didn't happen for me yet.

Congrats on a great upcoming litter! Those are going to be sweeet babies! Good luck with that.

I like the observation regarding the male. I think that is very interesting. I might try that and see if I like it even more myself. I NEVER take my males out till the female ovulates AND goes into a shed. I think I might play with that a bit just to see if I notice anything different. You could be onto something. Then again, I do really like the security of knowing that if the female wants to copulate again, the male is there to do his duty. Still a very very interesting observation I will play with a bit.

It is really interesting to watch the male just move away after he seems to have done the damage already. My males move back and forth. On and off again repeatedly it seems for a week or sometimes a month. Perhaps just taking him out if he moves away will make her ovulate more quickly. Interesting. I'm just thinking out loud. Time will tell.

Thanks for making the post and especially making this comment about removing the male. Good luck with this female that will make a great litter for you in four months!

It has happened like clockwork for me. I have never had a female ovulate while the male was still in the cage. Perhaps this is just coincidental and lucky timing on my part, but maybe not?

When I see the males roaming, especially when they start pushing the glass looking for a way out, I give them a few days to see if they change their mind. After a few days, if they're still wanting out, I pull them. Almost always get my ovulation immediatly.

This one was slightly different, he was pushing for a way out for a few days like I said, so I separated them. After 2-3 days, the female hadn't ovulated, stayed with her normal pre-ov swell.

Not wanting to take any chances of pulling him too early, I threw him back in. Immediatly started pushing the glass wanting to get away from her. So I left him in for 2-3 days. Nothing changed, he couldn't get far enough away from her. I pulled him out on Christmas eve. less than 48 hours later, she ovulates.

I've been expirementing with it obviously, but it seems to work for me. Maybe it's just lucky timing, maybe not. But as I said, I've never had a female ovulate while the male was still in.

Just curious if anybody else has experienced anything like this?

I experienced the other end of the spectrum last year. I took the male out to feed the fem blew up huge . I thought I would see an obvious ovulation. Although I didn't want anything to jeopardize the litter results. So I put the male back in. This appeared to stress the fem and cause her to reabsorb the follicles that were no doubt extremely ripe.

So what you have observed certainly makes good sense to me.

I want some footballs too, I don't just want footballs I need them !

I had a male boa this season pushing on the glass after a few weeks of heavy courting. I separated him (along with the rest of the males for a small snack). He didn't eat. I put him back in with the same female. He resumed trying to get out of the cage. She was still showing her pre-swell so I left him in. Nothing happened for over a week. Now he is back to courting her again, and she still hasn't ovulated.

I don't know why he wanted out since he wasn't hungry, and apparently wasn't done courting her... silly creatures, lol.

I actually kinda tested my male to see if he was done with this girl orur not. I was confident that the female was done because she had been swollen for weeks, and over the course of the last week she had swollen even larger, then began sitting in HCP. meanwhile the male was looking for a way out. so I knew ovulation was right around the corner.

but what I mean by testing the male, after he had been pushing the glass for a few days wanting out, I took him out and placed him with another female which was currently alone as the male breeding her was out for feeding.

This male came off my hands spurring and was locked up in seconds. wasted no time going to work. I didn't want this female gravid by this male, so I only, left him in for about a day. at which point he was still courting her. I pulled him out and put him back with his original female, he went straight to roaming the cage and looking for ways out. wouldn't go near her. I gave him 3 days to change his mind, but he didn't. wanted no part of her, so I knew they were done.

I pulled him again, within 36 hours, BAM! she ovulated. the male was interested in breeding, just not her anymore....

worked out nicely! not the first time I have experienced this, it seems to always happen this way once the make has been pulled.
