Should I put her down now?

khalliaar Oct 02, 2003 10:10 PM

My GF has been on here, asking about my gecko a lot, and what has been posted has been very positive. But after today, I think she might have to be put down (I really don't want her to suffer through a slow death). I'll start from the top.

My girlfriend and I were giving her some babyfood and water, she took it down ok and everything was fine. We put her back in her temporary home. We both sat down and started to hear her freaking out. She was on her back legs and started whipping her head back and forth. Some of the food flew out and she started to twitch. After she stopped moving so much, we picked her up to see if she was ok. She wasn't breathing or moving. After about 30 seconds, she flipped around and tried to snap at her side. Then she stopped moving again. After 40 seconds or so, she did it again. She continued this behavior for a little while, taking longer and longer everytime. Eventually she stopped completley, not breathing or moving. We put her in her tank again and put the cave over top of her (just in case she wasn't dead). It took about 3 mins for her to begin moving or breathing. We left her alone for hours, she seemed almost normal again. Just now my gf picked her up and a patch on her belly (in a strange, shape, maybe her stomach) was all red. she also had a strange brown indent on her chest.

Any way, she is acting ok now, but her belly is really bothering me. What should I do? (I'll talk to the vet, but I still would like your oppinions)

Thanks

I'd take her to the vet immediately

She has been to the vet twice now (for the impaction). She was getting better until the incident today. Yes we should take her to the vet for this separate incident but it is getting expensive with all the antibiotics and costs and we are only 16. We really don't want her to suffer, but we don't want to give up on her. She's still so young.

Sorry to hear about your little one. Leopards are very resilient reptiles, but stress can make them go down hill fast. It sounds like her stomach is hurting her a lot if she is biting at it, I would guess she is recovering from the impaction. I would keep the handling to an absolute minimum. Even taking her to the vet again could cause too much stress for her. But I would defiantly call the vet and explain what happened, and he/she may be able to give you some good advice.
My advice is to not give up on her, I would just leave her alone for a few days and see if she makes any progress on her own. If she gets much worst, then it may be time to consider about putting her down. Do you think she could find the water dish on her own? Maybe a small dish of baby food mixed with calcium powder? That would be the best. Hope this helps and please keep us posted.
