Alligators and Caiman

pisces842001 Oct 02, 2003 10:12 PM

I have a 1 1/2 foot american alligator that I have had for about two years now. I was wanting to know if it is possible to hold a baby caiman in the same enclosure? I am not sure whether I will get one or not. That is a decision that I am still considering. But just as a question that is something I needed to know. I like the fact that they don't grow as large as alligators but on the other hand their aggressive nature would make it rather hard to keep it right now. It will probably have to wait until I have my own place before I could get it but I wouldn't want to have separate enclosures for each. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Chris

I would not recommend this for several reasons. First of all both of these animals will need plenty of space. It is very difficult to house one crocodilian (alone). Two will be that much harder. I would be concerned about parasites and the possibility that the alligator will kill or injure the caiman. I have 6 crocodilians right not. Each is has their own enclosure.

What kind of caiman were you thinking of getting? It will be difficult to find a spectacled caiman as the are not being imported and are banned for interstate sale.
