In a bind!! Questions!!

jack7777766 Oct 02, 2003 10:14 PM

Hi,

My land lady just went crazy about me having snakes and is forcing me to get rid of it.
However I can leave it at my grandparents home but I wouldnt be able to feed it or anything.
Since late december Ill be moving back with my grandparents I was wondering if I could just leave it there till then and use it as brumation???
I was wondering what the temps would need to be for it??
I only have one room to put it in and them temps now are around mid 70's and Im it will get cooler as it gets colder.
I was wondering if it would survive if I leave it there till december???

Thanks
Jack

dude, you're doing everything but solving the problem. Do your grandparents live in some other state? Is that why you won't be able to feed it? Are they opposed to thawing out some pinks and throwing them in the cage? Honestly, that is not a high maintainence snake. You can always teach an old dog some new tricks. ;0) So...are you like a loner or do you have herp friendly pals who will help you out?

btw, have you tried a calm, professional conversation with the landlady? Or did you totally neglect to mention the pets when you moved in? Take some action here, man, hop quick...like a bunny!

I live in Canada so I dont know what the laws are where you are, actually I dont even know where you are But if I were you I would check with the landlords and tenants act, not sure what you would call it but they could help you out Im sure. When I was renting I only had a cat and a bird my landlord flipped out over the cat. Turns out that we could have pets under 25lbs by law and any caged animal that is allowed by law in our province. She was fine with it after she was aware of the law but she also really liked us.

Not the type of answer you are looking for but in most states (like the one I'm living in for example) your landlady couldn't have you on the street by December. If I understand correctly that you are going to be leaving in december anyway just stay.

Deffinitely check the Landlord and Tenant act in your area. You can find information about it online, just specify your state/country. There are a few exceptions, typically with city by laws, so you will want to check those as well.

For most cases, she can't throw you out because you have a snake unless there is reasonable cause (ie the snake is lose all over the building, causing damage, other tenants complain etc.) A cornsnake wouldn't cause damage to the building, is harmless and contained in it's own cage, so they can't throw you out. They could make things difficult for you (ie slow to do maintenance, give you hard time about rent being on time etc).

Even if the lease says no pets allowed, you may stil be able to keep the snake, especially when you already plan to move in 3 months. You can explain to your land lady you are moving out in three months, but won't get rid of the snake before hand. She may accept the snake for that period of time, instead of the length, cost and trouble of fighting it legally.
