Hey Jeff, I spoke too soon, Ovulation #2

NUCCIZ_BOAS Jan 05, 2012 04:14 PM

Wasn't it just a week ago that I said I have never had a female ovulate with the male still in the cage? For some reason, my males quit breeding a female a few days before, I can sense the female is about to ovulate, so after a few days of non-breeding, I pull the male out, and my ovulation happens almost instantly.

I thought perhaps there was some science behind this, maybe the male being removed made the female less stressed out, allowing them to ovulate.

Well last night I had my first ever ovulation with the male still in the cage. This is a VPI T-positive female that was bred by a hypo arabesque. The arabesque is 100% het albino, but that wasn't my goal, I'm aiming for hypo arabs het VPI.

I haven't removed him yet because he's still been breeding. Especially over the last week, he must have known she was ready to ovulate, because he's been breeding especially hard in the last 6-7 days. Or maybe he's really horny?

But it gets weirder....

She ovulated with the football last night, I come home today and find her swelling has gone back down, and he's breeding her again! Horny lil fella, might have to find another girl for him.

Sorry for the bad picture of the ovulation, it was taken from a cell phone

And today, he's attempting to breed her again! I didn't catch them locked up, but he is trying!

Thanks,
Tony

You have some REDICULOUS VPI stuff that you have acquired this year which has left me drooling! I'm not sure I want to let you put me in the rear view mirror that much more....

lol just kidding, I will keep you posted on this litter. May 3rd is her date (pending a POS shed).

We'll see in a few months!

I may be imagining this but I think that ovulation looks like it could be on the left side.

Possibly he's breeding still because another ovulation needs to occur on the right side.

Just a thought Tony.

Congrats Man looks like a good season for you !

I was actually thinking that same thing, which is why I left him I'm with her. I'll pull him out when he stops breeding or she goes into shed. she doesn't seen to be fighting his efforts, so I'll leave them be.

it was very hard to tell. the swelling was huge, definately big enough for it to be both ovaries, but she was positioned so weird that getting a good picture was impossible, especially with my phone.

when the ovaries ovulate separatly, how far apart do they pop? never had it happen before.

In all honesty I have not personally witnessed this with my Boas either.

Jeff has documented it many times and it can be 1-2 days or even a week or 10 days I believe.

Separate ovary ovulation's really confuse me, I can't figure out why it occurs, there doesn't seem to be a benefit .

Plus I've speculated that the first ovulation uses all the sperm present and the second
if the male doesn't continue to breed would possibly be the reason we see slugs.

Just something I've thought about.
