I almost forgot............

Brian,

I am not sure whether this is good or bad. I purchased about 4 dozen bass minnows for my gator from a bait shop. I put them all in his pond. He hasn't eaten for about a week now. I can never get him to eat rodents. He will kill them but refuses to eat them. He loves catfish nuggets. I have been feeding him those mostly. But now he hasn't even eaten them. Is there anything I can do to get him to eat rodents. I would like to get him started on some to get him his vitamins. Any help as usual will be appreciated. Thanks again.

Chris

He could be instinctually preparing for his winter sleep. If his water and air temps were real low for any considerable time, that is.

Catfish kibble is not an adequate diet for crocodilians as it is a food designed for an omnivorous animal. Trout chow is designed to meet the needs of a carnivorous animal and has a much higher percentage of protein and so is much more suited to a carnivour like a gator. Some gators really just don't like rats or rat pups very much. I have had many that prefer the kibble to the fresh whole animal option. And you can't go wrong with chicken parts, like hearts, liver and other high-vitamin or nutrient packed organs as well as a generous amount of the chicken meat. (white meat has less fat) If he's real small you can also supliment his diet with insects. You can buy and breed crickets for him, or madagascar giant roaches.

Sorry I didn't answer your email. I got it during a busy hour of my day.

i think there is a misunderstanding... catfish nuggets are the actual raw meat from the fish, not the diet of the fish. If these nuggets, thawed, are supplemented with minerall (the best vitamin supplement out there), it is a perfectly good diet. Refrain from chicken, however. CHick will give your gator faily loose stool (the hershey squirts), and poses a higher risk of salmonella. Chris, have you yet to try wrapping or scenting the pinky mice with nuggets like i have told you before.

Actually I didn't have to. He was really hungry and I threw him 4 of them and he took them all down in less than 1 minute.
