Sulphur VS. Fire

dxd6662 Jan 08, 2012 08:28 PM

I have a small collection that's just starting to breed now. I'm looking for a new co-dom to play with. I know that both of these produce black eye lucies. My question is do they both produce the same quality when crossed with pastels ? I like black eye lucies with the orange blotching so I'm leaning to the sulphur, but the primary use would be to mix in with the pastel crosses I'm making. I checked world of ball pythons, but they have a very small variety of sulphur crosses
Thank You;
Daniel

And here is a pastel sulfur mojave pinstripe. Don't have any pastel fire crosses for comparison, but others here should be able to provide those.

OOOO I like very nice!!!

TimS Jan 09, 2012 03:58 AM

and maybe see some plain fire and sulfur comparisons next to each other (IF possible)

Fires are lighter. I will try to take a pic later today with a better fire, but here is a photo I took a while back of my blackback fire with a sulphur.

its nice to see actual comparison shots of snakes that are sooo similar in appearance

They appear to do some different stuff......

Still not common... I don't even have any!! (Booo Hoo,,,)

More room to investigate their potential for sure!

I really like the SUper blotches and the genetic "code" that allows weird color/pattern.

I will be more then happy to take a few things off your hands so you can get some sulfurs lol. doesnt even have to be any of your amazing stuff. I dont mind the ugly single or double gene stuff lol

Here is a example of my Supe Fires'. It all boils down to lineage in my opinion.

The previous post was of a 2009 female. This past season I made this male. Sorry for the phone pic. I have only made 2 super fires so it seems to me that some individuals are more likely to throw a desired trait than others.

The nicest Super Sulfur I produced this year was a female, and my first female Super Sulfur. She is the second nicest I have produced. The male from like 09 is still one scale shy of having a perfect and unbroken yellow stripe. My Super Ember is a possible Hypo, or Het Hypo, and has the least amount of orange. In my few years of breeding these, it "seems" the plain ole Super Sulfurs, not combined with any other gene, have the most orange. This is preliminary, and by no means set in stone, it has just been my experience. The linked picture shows two male Super Sulfurs, both produced from the same clutch. I think the light one may prove out to be a Mojave Super Sulfur, but the new owners will have to let us know for sure.

Here is the first Super Sulfur I produced, and the one with the most orange and yellow.

In the Image link, there is a picture of the original Sulfur female, who might be 20 years old or older.

Thank you all for you quick replies and photos. I was especially happy to see the ones Dave from emberball posted, they were the ones that caught my eye when i was originally planning this project out.

Here is what I tell people when they ask about Sulfurs versus Fires:

It depends on what you want to do with them, and if you are going for Lucies, do you like the colored ones or as white as possible. In my experience, I have produced High Orange Lucies on all but ONE of my Lucies, and that male was a Spider Possible Mojave Super Sulfur. I think the Spider and/or Mojave genes in him caused him to have less of the orange and yellow coloring. The other Supers I have produced have ranged from basically all Orange on the dorsal, to a ton of Yellow striping and spots. So, if your goal is to produce an orange Lucy, I would say go with the Sulfur gene. I do not think my ratio of Orange Lucies is a fluke. If your goal is one orange scale, and 99.9% white Lucies, I would say get a Fire, or get Sulfur combos(Again, I think the more genes in the Super Sulfur, the more white and less orange). If you do not really care about the Lucy, and it sounds like you do, I would offer the advice of get an animal you like visually. If you see a Sulfur or Fire at a show, that blows you away, get that one. If you see a particularly cool Sulfur or Fire in an ad, one you really like, get that one. Same with combos, if you see a cool Sulfur Mojave that blows you away, get it. If you see a cool Fire Mojave, and you cannot live without it, grab it.

I know there are high orange Super Fires out there, but there are also probably 100 times the number of Super Fires vs. Super Sulfurs, and probably equal the number of High Orange Supers. You cannot argue-ok, some of you probably could-with 5 of 6 animals coming out High Orange...where as High Orange Super Fires are the exception, not the rule. The Super Ember is pictured, somewhat Higher than normal Orange, and he is the first Super Ember ever, and he is what I would call Medium Orange. He is also possible Hypo, or Het Hypo.
