Short Story

KingDome Jan 12, 2012 10:42 AM

When I came on this forum a little over a year and a half ago, someone told me that snakes are like potato chip, you can’t eat just one. Well, who would’ve thunk!

It started in a land not so far away in my back yard. I found a spider that filled up the bottom of a quart jar. I took it to the reptile man at the flea market, just to find out what kind it was. I traded that Carolina Wolf spider for a tour of his exhibit. My daughter and I were hooked.

I got my first snake. White and black Cal King reverse strip. I decided that he needed a mate. I got my second snake. Stripped Cal King, black with a white strip. Man, she was a beauty. I decided not to mate the reverse strip because he had banana in him. Just not my cup of tea. So I started looking for another suitable mate for my female. In the process, I found two Mandarin Rat snakes, I just could not pass up. I had to talk the “better half” into that venture. She loved the color pattern. Yeah. So,in the process of coming up with the money for those two, I found a suitable mate. Another male striped Cal King for my female. All three snakes were to be delivered on Wednesday. Everything going as planned. Wait, BACK UP... On Tuesday the pet store called my wife. Someone had a banded Cal King for sale. Nope, to late. My wife had the seller call me on Wednesday. I told him “Nope, I’m broke, with three snakes on the way. Where do you live?” You’re kidding, five minutes from my house. OK, I’ll come give it a looksy.

Well, Holy Crap!! He had this snake for three months, outside, in a nasty aquarium, no water, no to hide, a little dirt in the bottom, no heat, a dead mice that had been there rotting for over a month, his wife wanted to kill it, would not let it in the house, and the temps were dropping below freezing tonight.

Needless to say, I called my wife and told her the house payment had to wait. I could not leave this snake here. So, four snakes in one day. That is how I ended up, so far, with six beautiful snakes.

The moral of this story is…. If you open a bag of chips, don’t just eat one. Pick up the whole bag and take it with you around the party room. It is all about the adventure along the way, trying to get to that last chip!

Illustration coming soon.

Very decent of you to rescue that snake. The guy should have just given you the poor mistreated creature.

Yea, he kept it alive just to get money. I ended up getting the snake and three other aquariums in the back yard, so maybe he won't be torturing any helpless creatures any time soon.

Ditto!......Back in 2008 when I decided to rebuild my collection I figured I wanted about 50 snakes and I'd have everything I wanted........I got nearly everything I ever wanted and then some....but along the way I've added a few things to the list....
If I could just get about 20 more snakes I'd have everything I wanted.....That would topple me over 5 times as much as I initially thought I'd want this go round......LOL

Great Story Davy....isn't this fun?

Just wait till you start seeing cute little faces poking out of plump eggs, lol!

A true story...My wife has been fighting me tooth and nail for the last 10 or 15 snakes I purchased. Recently I saw a pair of adult granite Alterna on the classifieds which I really wanted, but I said no, I need to stop for a while. My wife will kill me If I tell her I want to spend that much on ANOTHER pair of snakes. Well, I was showing her the Albino "Alterna" in the ads, when she started looking thru the other ads. Then all of a sudden her jaw drops, and says, "oh wow, we have to get these!" Guess what she saw? The same snakes I had been lusting over in secret, lol! We are now the proud owners of a new pair of Granite Alterna! I'm having lots of fun!

Good for you for rescuing that snake!

One of the "dangers" - if that is the right term - of this hobby is when you have a nice bag of plain potato chips, you start looking at the barbeque chips and want those. So you trade the plain for some barbeque. Then you see the corn chips and want those, first plain, then you want nacho cheese...

Although that is all great fun, it is nice (if this is a hobby only and not a source of income) when you can get to the point of being excited about some nice projects and see them through to the best of your ability, whether they are plain potato or nacho cheese. Just an opinion. Of course, enjoy the ride wherever it takes you!

KingDome Jan 12, 2012 01:45 PM

>>>Of course, enjoy the ride wherever it takes you!

Thanks I will. Good point. Point taken. Then you have several bags and you pour all in one bowl, then you put your hand in and you don't know what you are going to pull out.

I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation for the folks that produce pure breeds, pure lines, pure lineage, (lack of correct terminology). I think that is very important to the industry.

I too respect those who have taken a particular line or locality and continued over many years to keep it going. Back in the day I did not think that way so much, because I figured snakes were pets in boxes, never going into the wild, so who cares so much about locality. My view has changed. Maybe with laws looming to take away our legal ability to keep many herps, it would show lawmakers that we care about conservation and the animals, rather than them thinking we are just a bunch of people who want to throw a live mouse in with some albino snake for the sheer thrill of it, and post it on youtube. Unfortunately, that is what too many people will continue to think herpers are like unless we change that perception.

markg Jan 12, 2012 02:43 PM

Why do I rant??

What I wanted to say is I have a friend who has been breeding a locality of Cal king that has lost most of its habitat over the last decade and only remains today on very few small disjunct plots of land. He has bred these kings true even though they are the ugliest things on the planet and command a whopping $50 per snake when he actually charges for them. But I respect and admire his vision to keep it going, and those ugly snakes are the bomb IMO.

rosspadilla Jan 12, 2012 09:06 PM

Yeah, you must be talking about the Long Beach Grease kings. Cool locality. The kings there are not easy to find.

-----

markg Jan 13, 2012 03:40 PM

Yeah Ross, exactly. I work somewhat close to those fields. I can see where there are many hide spots for kings, but alot of the boards and debris is gone from years ago.

There was another very small field adjacent to my work that truly was a flat plot of grass surrounded by development. A friend who worked for the city told me that 5 adult kings were found when the field was being bulldozed. I would have never guessed that field could support that number. Just goes to show how dense Cal king pops can be. This field was as barren as could be with no corridors to other fields. He fortunately was able to take all of those kings. All beautifully ugly as sin.

rosspadilla Jan 13, 2012 04:30 PM

Wow, that is interesting. Is there any way you could get photos of those kings, if he still has them? That would be something really cool to add to the website along with the story. Is that field gone? I imagine there's no more snakes there now.
-----

markg Jan 14, 2012 11:56 AM

I'll contact him. They are essentially grease kings but not as dark as the darkest grease kings. The small size of this field tells me that Cal kings can live in very close proximity to one another.

markg Jan 14, 2012 12:07 PM

I already have seen in Palos Verdes that Cal kings can live practically on top of one another. There are pockets of Cal kings that are very dense, and other places that seem completely devoid of them. They must occur there too but probably not in the density.

There has been a large native vegetation restoration project in areas of Palos Verdes. Lizard populations swell where the changes are made, and the sudden appearence of sideblotch lizards where I never saw them before is interesting. I have no idea what this has done to the snakes, but it seems from what others have told me that Cal kings are just not found (yet) in these areas compared to the grasslands with non-native vegetation. I have not seen any rattlesnakes but my vet told me that there was a bloom this last season which corresponds to the native plant projects, since many dogs were coming in with bites. Don't know if it means they were displaced or that they do well in the new habitat.

Of course, there is no AC in the new areas. Any boards are quickly picked up by volunteers and workers, so it is impossible to really know what is going on there with regards to kings.

rosspadilla Jan 14, 2012 01:00 PM

Yeah, PV is a strange place. lol I've found kings in some areas and non in others that looked like identical habitat. One place has nothing but Gopher snakes, but the first snake I ever found there was a king and never seen another there since. They have to be there. Just because we don't find them, doesn't always mean they are not there, but it sure does feel like it if you never see them.

So, is that field still there where the 5 kings were found in LB? Not that I want to go, but If its been developed, maybe you won't mind sharing where it was. I'm just interested to see right where it was.
-----

markg Jan 14, 2012 07:02 PM

No problem. I'll email you thru kingsnake. Not like there are any more there to protect anyway.

DMong Jan 13, 2012 04:32 PM

Sadly enough, I am betting there were a number there that were not so lucky and got buried alive..

The thought of this happening to any type of animal always sends chills through my spine thinking how they would suffer in the process.........very, very sad.

I am just happy to hear that YOU have the snake now. If the snake had fluffy fur and big brown eyes instead of scales, the guy and his wife would be tossed on their ear in a jail cell for blatant animal abuse, but unfortunately, snakes cannot cry or whimper...............

Glad your story has a good ending there, and good luck with acquiring more cool "potato chips"..
