Nice Outer Banks and Splendida! The juvi floridana with no orange is pretty neat looking. Is it rare for them to have no orange or is that a locality thing?
-----

DMong Jan 13, 2012 10:58 PM

Thanks buddy!.....

It is not very common for them to have absolutely ZERO red as hatchlings, and I was VERY stunned to see that one hatch with none at all!. The majority of Florida kings usually hatch out with some degree of red hints on their flanks, and/or crossbands, but not always. And it can really vary GREATLY depending on the general locality and/or individual bloodline too. I didn't really know what to expect or think of her, but I knew she was VERY different than the others. And as she began to mature more, I was super stoked to see her gradually transform into that killer "green machine" she is now..LOL!

She is actually one of my very favorites, and I would like to get a very GREEN line of them going in the near future to be quite honest.

cheers, ~Doug

Yeah, maybe you could select breed that line into a Green Rat. lol But seriously, that is a really cool look with the green.

Yeah man,.. the killer green girl is really one of my absolute favorites Ross..

Doug, I think there is a certain selection bias when it comes to red in Florida. A lot of people select for hatchlings with the most red, so we end up with lines that produce more and more red Florida kings.

Last year I bred the same male brooksi to 2 different females. One clutched ended up being predominantly high red, while the other ended up with no red at all! I actually preferred the no-red clutch. More unique in my eyes, and I think they'll grow up brighter and cleaner than the red hatchlings.

DMong Jan 14, 2012 08:59 AM

Yes, I agree that of course many don't display any red at all. I have also seen plenty of captive and wild hatchlings that don't, and even within mine I have had a number of them that are black or dark chocolate brown and off-white, or black or brown and light beige/butter yellow. Some of those soon became very clean yellow too like you mentioned. They really can be all over the spectrum, that's for sure Nick.

What a trip it is to see those comparison pics, my friend!

I guess, or I am assuming, that there is no real surefire way to tell or predict how those brooks will turn out.

But....that is part of the fun, eh?

I have seen that as well with some of my pits, especially some of my northern pines. They are one way as babies, then they grow into colors and shades you never thought were possible.

Very cool!!

Yeah, it's ridiculous how much these things can change Billy.

You can often get a good idea of what some might look like later on, but really never know just how much or to exactly what degree most of the time. Some start leaning towards a different hue later on that you might not have thought or predicted, and some can be very close to what you were expecting. I have gotten a better handle of what might mature into what with everyone I raise and hatch. That was my whole intent from the very beginning in documenting the parent's progression and the original hold-backs. Even the ones I sell I like to take initial hatchling pics to compare with the customers later on if possible. It's interesting stuff for sure.

Hell yes, some of those pits you have really change dramatically too. You have sent me some insane shots in the past. Remember that deppei Dell and Cole posted a long time ago?, that thing was sick too!..

Thanks for sharing these pics, Doug. Looking forward to observing the color change with my pair of "brooksi". In fact, it has already begun after a couple sheds.

DMong Jan 14, 2012 10:17 AM

Sure thing Tim!,.......Yes, I am really looking forward to seeing how yours mature too!. I noticed a big difference in yours from between the time they first hatched and just before you got them as well. As you said, every shed brings out more and more basal lightening and coloring...
