Well the way I read it- if it's the burm and the African rock, although I don't like to see any of this sort of limits, i can see why and the few idiots ruined it for those that enjoy them responsibly. And in the end it is great news to see the boa off the list and some others that were listed not on as well....
Where are you seeing that some of the snakes are off the list?
Is it not still the 9 species list that includes boas?
I noticed it said that the list "originally contained 9 species."
Thanks in advance!

Then he went into detail of the amendment and that it is limited to burms and AR. Its common for laws to be written really broad and then have to sacrifice in order to get passed. In this case the Boa off is all we care about in this forum, and i did not read anything stating boas are included so As it reads that's what it means to me. Having said that now I wonder (nervously) how much does the reporter know/or is able to divulge without hurting his sources- who knows. How much is being left for the element of surprise by these rats in a suit politicians that perhaps are gagging the news or keeping highly confidential till tomorrow??. However I think it's better than if it read it's going down the way it was always supposed to.
But I'm not getting my hopes up for sure. I'll be very restless tonight...and keeping optimistic too...
Yeah. I saw that only Burms and AfRocks were mentioned but not where he said it would only be the two on the bill. Maybe there's some behind-the-scenes negotiating going on?
I'm having a hard time going to sleep as well.

This here tomorrow is a Federal deal. Not sure what injurious does this stuff do to the rest of the states. I live 20 minutes from ground zero. So the burms and africans were found so they're getting scratched, and they can justify it. The others are over reaching and it wouldnt be surprising if they Left it alone. The stink made by USARK and others, perhaps ( and I hope) was heard..
I'm hoping right there with you.
If this bill passes in any way and boas are okay for now, we need to stay together and rally with the ball python people in case they try to add species later on.
Best case, they've kicked it back and have to resubmit entirely.
Trying to stay positive!

If this bill changed and boas are off they would have to make a boa specific one and would need grounds for it. They have a little of that with the burms. I agree we need to stick together and make them feel they'll will never pass such a law so why even bother...
this was not a legislative process, btw. it was not a bill submitted by congressmen and voted on.
it was a "rule making process" undertaken by the USFWS/USGS. they have a certain amount of latitude to create rules that then get applied to laws (such as the Lacey Act - as in this case) without any input from legislators. they have a few hoops to jump through to do it, but it's much easier to get things enacted that way. after the python bans died in congress, they opted for the "rule making process" to circumvent the political process.
Devils advocate:
With what youre saying - It can be fought then. So if they made it to universal they'll take alot more heat. Burms and AR will go down nicely and few will squeal...
the only way it could get reversed is if they did it themselves, or we filed suit against them under what's called the "information quality act", which basically says that when decisions like this are made, the evidence being used to support the decision must be able to stand up to a certain level of scrutiny.
if that's the route we take, it will be a VERY long and VERY expensive process with no guarantee that it will turn out in our favor.
a law that took the more traditional route (through congress) would theoretically be easier to overturn... just wait for a more friendly congress.
You can argue whatever they're gonna do tomorrow was done themselves as congress and senate did not pass it. Let's just hope it doesn't go there cause boas will spark enough fight to take it as far as it needs to.... my opinion.
You seem more concerned that they left your boas alone for now then the fact they just banned 3 species of snake. I believe the boas will be next. We all stand up together. We should all fight to stop the ban on Burms. But that didn't happen and they will continue the banning of reptiles one species at a time. Divide and concur is what they will do. And the tone in the last few posts makes it clear that we already been divided. The government has this hobby where they won't it and now boas are just sitting ducks.
And once the boas go and the other 5 species, then the next business that will see the hit will be petco, fed ex, ups, USPS, home depot, rodent pro ect ect ect. You watch. All because of government greed and politics. It's all about the profit of the greedy as they wipe your and my business with their corrupt smelly ass.
You are partly correct , but the boa would be history if not for our efforts. Many of us sent countless letters to help with this fight. Manny is correct that our industry needs to take some of the blame. Selling that little baby burm and a 20 gallon tank to the unknowing customer. I stopped going to local shows because of this. I see way too many deadbeat breeders and swappers out there and they will sell anything to anybody. Its always the few bad apples that ruin it for the others. Just keep fighting the good fight and we will win.
I'm in south florida, the Burmese and the other animals have been taken a long time ago. The boa, the only species I breed, and new to this ban stuff, would be difficult thing to deal with. I don't think burms should be totally banned, but they should be for an elite keeper with certin rules such as large cats, crocodilians etc. I don't think the average pet owner that buys an 18 inch baby burm at a pet shop knows what it's in store. The people here on this forum do, but 99% of burm buyers were not like us here.
I think the same for the iguana. A 6 foot iguana is for a select few to handle and care for....
in REALITY it has nothing to do with any other states. but after the USGS/USFWS concocted science to support their claim that burms could eventually invade the lower 1/3 of the US, it became everyone else's problem.
this whole issue has been constructed by the USGS/USFWS in order to make the MOST impact and thus reign in the MOST funds for further research. the best way for them to do that was to make it a federal issue (hence the fraudulent "studies"
because that's where the money is.
it's sick.
True and true. I think they're BS was brought to light on their trying to add species willy nilly and theyre sticking to the burms and African rocks which are the only 2 trapped in the glades
I have a hard time believing that some random reporter knows more about this issue than any of us. It's POSSIBLE, but I highly doubt it.
I feel like the OMB had some pressure put on them that they didn't care for and are caving to that pressure. My guess is that all 9 are still there.
I don't know about you all, but I don't plan to live in my current state forever. So, I'll probably be committing somewhere in the range of a 100 or 200 felonies in the years to come. Remember, EVERY animal and EVERY state line crossed is a NEW felony.

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

DeviantConstrictors.com Site received a complete makeover! Check it out!
don't get your hopes too high...
keep in mind this article was written by a newspaper writer, and if past practice is any indication, they did VERY little research into this.
the rule (as written) would apply to all 9 of the "big constrictors".
i'm not sure if they can modify it at this stage. what was submitted was the final draft, and i think in order to modify it, the OMB would have had to kick it back to USFWS to re-write it - which we certainly would have heard about.
i'm operating under the assumption that the author of the article wasn't thorough in his research and it is going to pass as originally submitted - including ALL of the Big 9
agreed, I also think it stands with the '9'
have a feeling, going to wake up tomorrow to some horrible news

Should be a little happier now
>>Should be a little happier now
not really, they are still 'under consideration' and now that they got those 4 banned, it's only going to snow ball from there
(yeah I am a pessimist)
sad day for the reptile nation

Hopefully this will take years before things come to a head again. Just keep fighting like I know you will and you will one day be an optimist.
I would say that it's not unheard of for them to come down with the decision with changes of their. I've seen of in medical, financial and real estate sectors...it's written then passed after its been reviewed by the people that make the final say and changed in the process..
i certainly hope that's the case.
but i can also see some idiot reporter jumping the gun before he does adequate research and getting some facts mixed up. the guy probably knows very little about the whole issue to begin with - other than that "burms are invading the everglades" that is.
as i understand the process, the USFWS created the final draft, then submitted it for consideration by the OMB. the OMB would either pass it as written, or kick it back to them for changes. i would THINK that we would have heard through SOMEONE if it was kicked back. it's not like USARK doesn't have connections on those levels. i could be wrong, though - and hope i am.
if we're REALLY lucky, they kicked it back and the USFWS removed all but burms and af-rocks to ensure passage - all without telling anyone.
hoping...
That's exactly what I think happened.
Also the reporter is savvy enough to know the difference between what's going down tomorrow and what's "original"
Consider that and see if it helps you rest better tonight..
If I had burms I'd be heart broken tonight..
Twenty minutes before we hear this decision.
VPI got its Texas Sales License in 1992. That is twenty years.
