Tell that to anyone who invested money in new burm morphs the past few years! Can you imagine most reptile shows and pet shops in the country no longer having burmese pythons at them? That is a victory? Then in a day or two when they ban retics and boas and they are destroyed in value and cut from the bulk of the pet trade will you post that its a great victory because we still have the ball pythons? Even though thousands of people in this business are about to lose the values of their investments?

Everyone understands what you are saying but it is putting a band aid on a severed limb. This is the biggest blow to the pet trade and the reptile business in legal history. I seem to recall reading something a year ago or so about how usark won this fight and beat the governments bad science. Where are you usark?

And now that burms are worthless how many will get set loose in florida?

Ummm I don't think we won anything!!! We just lost the ability to pretty much buy, sell and trade four species of animals, with more still on the chopping block. Not too sure how you see we won this!

burmsandballs Jan 17, 2012 01:36 PM

We haven't won anything......We lost alot, some people that specialize in burms lost just about everything and you say we won...not even close!!!!!! now it just makes it easier for them ban other species and not just the other 5 on the list....give them time and they will ban ball pythons too....at this point i believe the reptile industry lost big time and it will definitly get worse!!!!!!

and it seems like around election time is when they focus on these bogus laws, when everyone in congress is focused on elections and getting elected for something or other they will just push laws through just to make them look better

eventually they will make it that you cant even own a reptile or any other animal for that matter.....don't worry it's coming...
we are officially screwed so sell out now before they are worth nothing

geckocrazy Jan 17, 2012 02:03 PM

First off I'm not only invested in balls. Of those four the burmese is the only one I chalk up as a loss. How many people do you know that are invested in the others? Hopefully they got there way and it will settle down now. You really think that burms are going to disappear? I plan on picking up some this year!! Look at it like this. The baby turtle law has been in place for ages. Now tell me how many shows do you go to and see them on tables? It could be much worse. I guess that's how I look at it!!

Not sure where you go but I have not seen any illegal baby turtles being sold at any of the shows I have been to. It's not illegal to sell baby turtles.
Do you honestly think that it's going to be legal to own any of those banned snakes for much longer? I am willing to bet that now that they are on the list, that almost every state will soon ban them too. This is just the start. It is a horrible loss for us and a huge victory for organizations such as HSUS and PETA.

We have unfortunately brought this upon ourselves.

Also like Evan Stahl stated, I wonder now how many Burms are going to be released into the wild?

stevebp Jan 17, 2012 04:34 PM

This is not a victory at all! This law is truly bull#$%t!!! I do not have any burms or rock pythons myself but have many friends that do, not to mention all those breeders who put years and years into this industry. I fear that this law is just the beginning and hope that these politicians who only know what they hear on the news about snakes will stop the bulls*&t and worry about things in this country that actually need attention!!

dagu Jan 17, 2012 09:04 PM

They are politicians. It doesnt matter if they know the facts. Opinions with alot of money are close enough. It doesnt matter who they hurt unless they are in the majority when it comes voting time.

geckocrazy Jan 17, 2012 09:10 PM

I couldn't agree more. You are all right this is truly a blow to the industry, but they have more funding and pens to sign bills with than we can compete with. Something was gonna be done in there favor one way or another. I'm just thankful this is what they did instead of banning them all..

ohernz Jan 17, 2012 05:51 PM

I don't think we won anything...It's already illegal to own Burmese pythons, African Rock pythons, reticulated pythons and anacondas in Florida unless you have obtained a $100 annual license and had the animal microchipped BEFORE July 2010

"Only lost burms, rocks and yellow anacondas for now. Let's hope this is where it ends!!"

THIS!!!! THIS is why the herp world will get what is coming! Feable minded, short sighted, petulant, child like attitude of MANY keepers!

THIS..... is just the BEGINNING of the END.... the lawmakers are interested in the whole ball of wax. Some of us have already know this and hedged accordingly..... for others COGNITIVE DISSONANCE runs deep!

lairofdragons Jan 17, 2012 11:39 PM

One lost species is still a lost, 4 is still a major loss...I dont own any of the four but know plenty that do and its only a start.
If Florida thought they had a problem now...wait till they run across several morphs of large snakes...all they did was
re-populate a problem that they cant control.
Now other State will start having large snakes sightings, over run with large rats, rabbits other large snake food supplies. Only because its easier to let them go then pay for permits and chips for the snakes and over a surplus of food supply.
Its not the end just the beginning......
I love large snakes but have not owned one in a long time because I had a feeling the day was coming...had several offers to trade BP's for Berms but just could not do it. Ended my Red Tail Projects except for one pair for the fear of them hitting the list...large snake market already "Suc%&d" because of pending fears...
Not a Victory...major set back for sure.

LAIR OF DRAGONS

rpmoore318 Jan 18, 2012 09:42 AM

I hope statements regarding the future release of burms and associated prey items is merely frustration being vented; if not, I have two big concerns.

1) I like to believe that people in this industry keep reptiles for reasons besides their monetary value. I know that if they pass laws to ban my animals I will keep them until someone comes into my home and forcibly removes them. They can take the monetary value, they can't take the inherent value to the keeper. Only we can give that away.

2) If releases occur now we are surely doomed as a whole. If the attitude of this industry is to toss away our animals as if they're a foreclosed home, then the government has truly won and deservedly so.

We as a community have to stand behind our rights and act as a watchdog, not only for the government, but for our industry as well. We cannot allow the propagation of the behavior that got us into this mess in the first place.

Barker Jan 18, 2012 01:42 PM

I think what they are talking about are the people that have them as pets. If it is illegal to own them and people getting scared and tossing them for fear of legal action against them. Not the breeders themselves tossing animals because of loss of monetary value.

With some pet owners it is simply about ease. It is easier and cheaper to let their "beloved" pet go than spend the money to be able to legally keep it.

Personally, I agree with one of the above posts. Yes, I agree there are non-native snakes in the everglades......but why don't law makers do something about the feral cats and dogs? There are MANY MANY more of those than the snakes. And last time I checked they didn't eat grass and bugs. They are killing the native animals like rabbits and such. However, we go back the fear aspect. People aren't generally afraid of a cat running around loose. But most people are freaked out if they even find out you have a snake securely in a cage in your home.

Public stupidity at its best right here!
