Promote this Message - Regarding Ban

KBuckler Jan 18, 2012 02:14 AM

There NEEDS to be a Major reptile conference very soon, that all of us can attend, to address the Ban and other negative upcoming issues! USARK needs to be there and we need to fight back. We need someone to LEAD THIS FIGHT......who's it going to be???

There has to be something that can be done. We need somebody that is a MAJOR FORCE in the reptile Industry that can lead a fight. This needs to be viewable on the internet and advertised EVERYWHERE by EVERYONE !

This fight will cost money. Donations should be made.

Would USARK be the entity to accomplish this? I do not know, maybe.

Even though the Ban just happened, we need to be on top of this. If not it is only going to get worse. Some may say, don't jump the gun just yet. I say we must act immediately!

Sincerely,

Karl Buckler

Tinley in March is supposed to serve as just that. Someone can step in and correct me if I am wrong.

They have done an amazing job on the very small amount of money that we hobbyist and businesses have sent their way. We all need to donate whatever we can NOW to help them continue the fight. Maybe now that everyone realizes that the threat is very real we can fund them a little better!

Thank you USARK!

John is right!

We also need to realize that a large portion of the reptile and amphibian industry is not taking part in this fight. We have to educate, and get everyone on board, and we need to act in unison!

All Non Native Species of Reptile and Amphibian are targets!

Excellent point.

How do we do a better job of doing this? How do we motivate people to engage? If we can't get them to actively engage, how do we get them to otherwise support the cause?

I agree with your point, MOST of the herp community is not engaged. MOST probably don't realize the scope of the threat.

How do we change that? Clearly, they are not reading these forums. How do we even reach them?

Great question!

You are right, if we did not go to these forums on Kingsnake or elsewhere, there is a good chance we would not know about any pending legislation, or passage of such legislation. I think it would be tremendously beneficial to have links, and or banner space on Kingsnake (organization affiliations or not) that can be used to reach individuals that may only use the Classifieds section of this forum.

Websites and blogs – a simple posting and link on the front page of your website. Very similar to how Google and Craigslist are doing right now to bring awareness to SOPA.

Facebook - if you are not posting about this on Facebook, the people you know are may not be aware. Don’t forget that stupid ticker in the top right. You now have the ability to reach friends of friends!

Shows - Simply providing information at your booths can go a long way. I was shocked to find at a reptile show the utter lack of knowledge of any pending legislation. These are the single reptile homes, and we DO need their help!

Craigslist - I am not sure of what is allowed on there. A well-placed announcement with information on the pending legislation and organizations and their campaigns to fight it has the ability to reach at least a few people.

Newspaper - Take out an ad in the animal section?
Buying reptiles & supplies – does the person, shop, or business you spend your money at support the organizations that are fighting for us? I won’t spend money with anyone that I know is not doing everything they can.

Reptile stores could be including flyers in with their supply shipments to customers.

It is very important to relay to your audience that this is not only about large snakes. This is a precedent, and the US Government is not likely to stop anytime soon.

These are just a few things that come to mind. Yesterday was only the beginning. I fear for our long term rights to work with Non Native species. Where will it stop?

there USED TO BE an edit button on the KS forums. It has since disappeared and I can't figure out why. But it certainly is another straw on the back that keeps me from posting here often.

There hasnt been an edit button in probably 10 years. Since we set up a registration system for forums in fact. Why not contact me to discuss the other straws. You have my email and I would be interested to hearing the reasons with out distracting from the discussion at hand

That's great news. Unfortunately, I will be traveling and unable to attend. Do you have any ideas about webcasting the meeting or something to give those who are very interested, but unable to physically be there, to participate?

Thanks for organizing the meeting!

As we did the previous legal summit, during the meeting and discussion seminar on friday night, Kingsnake will be there live blogging and running the chat. There was some concern about broadcasting everything live last time so as to give away the entire plans. I would assume those are in place again. But I will be doing the live blogging and chat room updates.
