ASF caught on Glue Board (then released)

Bolitochrome Jan 20, 2012 08:29 AM

A young ASF who had escaped during cleaning and then caught on a glue board. I have had questions about how well this method of capture works, especially for the safety of the animal. Hope this video helps.

Sorry about the "shakey cam". I was in a hurry to both get the video and get the ASF unstuck. I will make a better one next time if someone is interested.

Cool. I sure could have used this when one of my snakes escaped and got stuck to one of these a few years ago. He survived for about a week after I pulled him off of it

I am sorry to hear that I have used these traps to capture a Ball Python, a Kingsnake, and a Cornsnake. Each time when they were released with a bit of oil they were just fine (if a bit crabby about being stuck on the board as long as over night). I have only had one rodent die after being caught on a glueboard because I didn't know the ASF had escaped and, due to work, I had not checked the petroom 17 hours. It was alive when I released it, but the stress was just too much for it.

I purchase the super basic, flat boards and just set them in corners and along walls all around the house. They are great for capturing escaped pets, but also for keeping on eye on the around-the-house pest population.

These are the ones I buy: www.amazon.com/Catchmaster-1872SD-Insect-Boards-4-Pack/dp/B001O7AYO0

I haven't bought these, but I have heard good things. They are designed specifically to capture snakes:

Wow...I don't know how I feel about this. I like how professional you were, and I love a happy ending. It looks very humane, however, what if you don't get there in time? They will then suffer a horrible death by suffocation from trying to chew their feet free. As I do not have a lot of experience with these glue traps, how long would It take for a rodent to pass away? Is it different for every situation depending on how frantic each one is/gets? If one were to check at least once a day, would 24 hours stuck on a trap be long enough to parish, or would one need to check twice a day?

Thank you for a great video. I would feel even better if I could get a little education on my questions.

I imagine if the traps aren't checked and the rodent is left on there for longer than 12 hours it would die. I have had 1 die on a glue trap because I didn't know it had escaped and didn't check the traps soon enough. Usually I check my petroom twice a day.

I have had a very young ASF stuck on a trap for, I THINK, all night. I think it got out *because* I checked water bottles and whatnot. I released it the next morning, cleaned it up and put it back with the colony, by that evening you wouldn't have known what happened to it.

I have never had a snake be anything but just angry at me because it was stuck to a glue board overnight.

So, in order for these to be effective at LIVE capture, they need to be checked diligently. As a result, they have worked wonderfully for me. I know these aren't for everyone.

Fantastic story/video. Purely educational. I love it.
Sorry to sound cruel but a dead rat on a glue board is better than a dead rat in your walls or somewhere hidden.
Thanks for the great video.

I agree with the "dead rat versus infestation" policy as well. That is why I keep glue boards stationed around my room at all times. I check them regularly to prevent any glue board deaths, but I would rather find that it had died stuck to a glue board than it had chewed its way into the wall or duct work and died there. Ick.

The glue boards are nice because they are a standard defense I can have around the room at all times, is effective at catching the animals, and almost completely non-lethal. Snap traps, tip traps, etc might prevent an infestation, but you also lose your rodent :

Thanks for the info on using cooking oil to release the trapees.

No problem. It works like magic, honestly. I'm not sure if Olive Oil would work...but that would be quite expensive.
