I havent really noticed people will larger collections getting out, I have even heard of people still breeding their burmese so that is positive.

What I am seeing is people on the fringe of the community, who may see or hear reports. THey hear the words "Python Ban" and they have a snake or two. They are not connected through online communities very tightly. They are calling my rescue in record numbers. I have fielded over 100 calls for my rescue in the past week of people wanting to surrender their boas and pythons. Seriously.

We really really really really need to stop using the word ban. I know, it is easier to say, but the word ban is not really what occurred. Another issues i am worried it will impact is when states enact actual BANS people wont care because they already think the animals are banned.

I agree with Cindy. Some should post therestriction on Craigslist to notify those with one snake, and other animal lovers, about this problem. This would be helpful because state and federally. restrictions will prevent all wildlife from being held by private citizens (most fed rules don't apply to those who make them). It should be worded in a way to not appear as only a snake keepers problem.

But it really isnt a ban so to speak and that is what people hear. They dont hear the end portion. I have made it a point to change my wording to an addition to the lacey act banning interstate transport.

I'm sorry you've heard that people are leaving the hobby, but from my experience the reptile industry is staying strong. For example, we just got back from the Repticon show in Atlanta this weekend and there were a lot of people buying reptiles (of all kinds). Despite the current addition to the registry of injurious animals, there were plenty of people buying not only ball pythons, but also a good number of Burmese. I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout and I'm really excited about 2012.
No doubt there are things we need to do as an industry to fight this and any future legislation, but I firmly believe we will rally together and address this in a legal forum where it resides now.
I wish everyone a prosperous 2012 season!
John
