Does a POS mean that the female is gravid? Or can a female still throw a POS but not be gravid? Does the POS just mean the female has ovulated but does not necessary mean she is gravid?

Im not too sure on this, all I know is my female just had her POS but the male is still courting her.

Are you sure it was a POS. Did you personally observe an O? Could have been a Pre O swell, making your shed a PPOS, meaning he's not done yet. Or, he is just happy and confused. Try reading the boa manual to them, so they know what their supposed to be doing.

Isn't breeding fun! Best of luck, whatever you're cooking.

I would leave him in until he is sure. Sometimes females can ovulate two separate times, and very far apart. You can not always count on POS, or ovulation 100% of the time. Usually when she is done, he will be eager to depart. Rarely, a male will just keep on trucking..... If you see babies, pull him out.

" POS " means and stands for "Post Ovulation Shed". If she ovulated most the time but not always the Ovulation will cause a shed 18 days later ( 18 days is by the book mathematically )

So it can be 16 days or 22 days give or take etc . . . but generally it's very close to 18 days after her ovulation.

Whether or not the Ova were fertilized by the Sperm is really
unrelated to the Ovulation and the Post Ovulation Shed.

Make sure you mark down both Ovulation and POS on your Calendar
so you can count to determine Parturition date.

So some things you can do to help yourself determine if she is truly gravid;

1) Observe the males behavior . . . . . is he still actively courting and breeding her?

A)If so she most likely needs to Ovulate still ( As Jesse mentioned )
there often are 2 Ovulation's at separate times.

B)If Not than there is a good chance the mission has been accomplished

2) You can shoot the Fems body with your temp gun, if she shoots 87* F or above chances are good the Fem is Gravid.

3) If she assumes the "HCP" (Heat Conservation Position) this is yet another positive indication she most likely is gravid.

Hope you find this info helpful.

Yea, the male is still courting her. I didnt see any ovulation in her, but I did give her a rat about 2-3 weeks ago and she been big ever since. She does look thicker then normal. Here last shed was Dec 2. And with only a total of 3 rats taken since that last shed, I didnt expect this new shed not to be a POS. Hmmm, I guess I can only leave him in until he is totally done with her and wants no more. I will temp shoot her tomorrow. She is on the cooler side of the cage. This is the type of stuff that makes breeding fun

If her last shed was on December 2nd, and you have fed her 3 rats since then, then it is possible this is a normal shed cycle. I have females that shed every 2 months regardless of how much (or little) they have eaten. Leave the male in if he is still courting. If she looks larger than normal, then it it possible she is still growing her follicles. I have witnessed a female shed while she was building follicles, and then again 3 weeks later after she had ovulated. Best of luck, and keep looking for the other behaviors that Lar pointed out.

What if the male is not trying to get out but still cuddling with the female? Hes not courting anymore and she had her ovulation.
