San Luis Potosi Kingsnakes

Aaron Feb 01, 2012 09:34 PM

It's been a while since I posted any pics so I thought I'd post something. This is a pair of San Luis Potosi Kingsnakes that I think have a unique look with their abundant split saddles and their serrated blotches and heavy black borders. They are from the Galvan bloodline out of Texas. John Lassiter also has pair from this bloodline, actually his female is the mother of the female pictured here and a sibling to the male, also pictured here. I hope this bloodline becomes better established in captivity since I think they offer some unique characteristics and not too many people I know of have them.

There is also some question as to whether they may be of the same bloodline that originated the speckled, aka Granite, mex mex and hopefully the breedings I have planned, as well as those of John, will shed some light on this. My Galvan female is not big enough to breed this year but I am going to put the male Galvan on a female Lemke line black phase and see what I get and hopefully next year I can breed the Galvan male with the Galvan female. I'll post a picture of the Lemke black phase next.

Aaron...
I think you know my hypothesis as to how the granite line came about......If not, here it goes.....
The Galvans were working with these Mex Mex from el Valle de los Fantasmas and they consistently produced these "split-saddled" animals. During one of the Alterna hunting Summers a German guy by the name of Helmut (forget his last name) got some of these Mex Mex from the Galvans. I think he traded an alterna for them.....so the story goes....

Through line breeding in Europe the Granites were developed. With more line breeding the ultra granites emerged.......The Bells, Barkers and Brian were able to bring them back to the states...

I don't even think the Galvans know that there animals were the ones that started these awesome granites.....Just as Bob Applegate didn't know that Mex Mex from his line produced the first Hypoerythristic Mex Mex......And all from the Valley of the Ghost.....

They are Killer Aaron.....Nothing beats the bright red contrast and split saddles......

John I think your assesment of the origins of the Granite line are probably true. I hesitate to call mine granites until further breeding proves it out. Plus if the Galvan's line pre-dates the European line it may not have ever been selectively bred like the European line and it may take a few generations to bring it out in the Galvan snakes. Hopefully time will tell.

Mark Kenderdine told me years ago that you could line breed the split saddled Mex Mex and create granites.......I haven't done it more than two generations but if I get eggs this year from them it will be third generation..

Vaclav in Czech Republic line bred some that I believe came from Helmut up the line and thought he created some of the first granites there.

If you look at Shores/Soderberg's granites that came from Dave and Tracy Barker (Europe also) they seem to be a little less refined. Mark Bell's and Brian's throw more ultra granites since they seem to be more refined......

All of your above posts are very nice. I especially like the pair under your "still other" post. They are really bright and gorgeous!
