Boa and Python in the same Rack?

Skyfire_1 Feb 03, 2012 10:01 PM

Quick Question. If I have three Ball Pythons in a Rack System, would I be able to put a Boa in a lower drawer of the same Rack System, or could the Boa give the Ball Pythons a disease such as BDI? If Boas and Pythons can not be housed in the same Rack System, then how far apart would they have to be housed?

Thanks...

Yes, you can house them in the same rack, as long as both animals share similar husbandry. If you run your hot spot in the high 90's for your ball pythons, then you may want to add some additional substrate into your boas tub to elevate it off of the heat, thereby reducing the temperature at the hotspot. I keep my hotspot for my boas around 89.

Boas and pythons are both susceptible to the same illnesses and diseases. While they can be housed in the same rack, it is a good idea to put any new snakes into quarantine before introducing them to your collection.

I hope this helped.

I currently have pythons and boas in the same rack, but i go through with the temp gun to find out what spot is best. Also any new animals go in a different room, (however there is VERY FEW people I will get an animal from and be ok with it going into the collection right away, VERY VERY FEW people)

Assuming all of your animals are healthy the simple answer is yes...
Hot spots and ambient temps in a single rack can be something you need
to look at, but I keep my hatchling and grow up bias and balls in the same
rack (at the same temps - ambient and hot spot - with no issues what so ever.
They all get the same cooling / light cycles and they all feed like clock work on
the same day.

Side note: if you're adding a new boa to your established rack system most
will suggest keeping the boa in quarantine for a few weeks or months. I personally use a small shoebox rack or 10/20/30/40 gallon breeder tanks for that job. Simple set up with paper towel substrate (so you can easily keep an eye on parasites and dedications) with a undertank heat pad and a water bowl.

Just my $.02
Good luck with your new acquisition!
Welcome to the dark side!
In my opinion boas own balls all day, everyday...
I love my balls and all, but I heard another member
refer to them as tub slugs and when compaired to boas
it's a very accurate description lol
