digesting to fast

mad_hops Feb 04, 2012 01:48 PM

i fed my sonoran gopher snake(nearly, but not quite 36" yesterday and it has already pooped, in the past it has taken a couple days, i gave it a small mouse, could it be it is too hot, or possibly parasites, or i recently moved it up from fuzzies so could that transition be part of it, please tell me what you think and how long should i wait until i feed it again?

Could be a combination of small food item and warm enclosure. My smallest Sonoran is about that size but is routinely feeding on weanling rats. Will transition to small rats soon. In my experience, smallish food items pass through the digestive system quickly. Not to imply that your enclosure is too warm, but if your snake is spending a lot of time on the warm side, that will speed up digestion too...

the thing is it does not look well digested at all, it looks like there is a lot of fur and possibly other undigested matter in it, is that because it is moving too fast, also does that deplete stomach bacteria like regurgitating does?

Never have issues like that with any of my Sonorans. One of the sources that I used to keep around for answers to questions like yours was John Rossi's book "What's Wrong with my Snake". Can't seem to locate my copy just now but is a highly recommended read. Should give you some good ideas for upkeep in general. Hope that helps.
