Which to purchase?

grafke07 Feb 05, 2012 08:23 PM

I was wondering what would be the best to add to my collection. Would purchasing a piebald male or a het female be my best choice? Im just trying to think of what would be the most beneficial.
Thanks,
Josh Graf

It all depends on what you have and what you would like to produce. We are pondering the same thing here. Look at your goal morph and try to plug in/fill in the blanks on what you need to get you there!

yeah i am trying to produce pieds. Then plug it into other things and i think if i get the pied male i can make my own hets with other morphs as well. im just trying to get some opinions on this.

That's what we ended up deciding.
Get a visual male and a female het. That way you can plug your male in later with your females. Best chance for success to me.

If you are talking about buying hatchlings, then ladies first -- always. Females take three years to make breeding weight, compared to one year for males. So if you are debating between a m/piebald and a f/het pied as your first purchase, I would say neither. Instead, buy a f/pied now, and then in two years when you need to start getting a male ready for her, the price on male pieds will probably have dropped to where you can buy a male pied rather than a het. That enables you to take luck out of the breeding equation.

Yeah that makes sense. I will just have to buy ghost females this year probably. thanks!
