That is an awesome salt water tank! Reminds me of snorkeling at the Big Island. Some sea horses would be nice, if they would be okay in that setup. Salt water tanks take some skill to manage successfully.

Thomas those are INCREDIBLE! I have a few tanks, but not saltwater... one is fresh and one is brackish. I'd say the coolest fish I have is an archer, they jump to snag bugs and can actually shoot water out of their mouths to shoot em down! lol, anyways, mandarins are by far my favorite saltwater fish, post some more pics!!!

thanks jeremy, yeah ive always had fish tanks, they soothe the beast. nothing like a nice "tank gazing" session to relax/calm the soul.
archer fish are way cool, i never had one but had a friend who had one with a string across the tank and would set a cricket walking the preverbial tightrope and it wold nail it everytime awsome aim
ive also had oscars that would come take pinkie mice from my hand, arrowanas to but reefs imho really are the most fun just takes time.

GONE FISHING!!!

RandyWhittington Feb 15, 2012 08:42 PM

Expensive but a facinating hobby. I had a 75 gal with mostly SSP and LSP corals for years.
What sort of system you running (size, skimmer, lighting, sump, wave maker)?

hey randy, it can get expensive thats for sure.
130g retail lobster tank the visual part is 48X18X24, i got at an auction for hardly nothing, its made by marineland for retail lobster displays. it has a chiller built into, it is made with a false bottom to circulate thru two layers of crushed coral then over chiller coils, basically a reverse flow biofilter in itself, cool design by marineland. i then added a 30g sump w/trickle filter and a large protien skimmer, that turns the whole tank over about 5-6times per hour.i do 20percent water changes every 4to6 weeks, no wave maker yet just 4 lg. powerheads for internal flow, lighting is 2 175w MH lamps and 4 54w T5 actinics, im all about the DIY aspect of fish keeping (snakes to!) so that helps w/some cost, plus you gotta weigh it and for me its more than worth it. this ones been up for only 2 yrs. i currently have sps and softies, zoas... its where i go to relax

Good to have the chiller built in. They are way too expensive when bought straight out.
By the way I meant I had SPS and LPS corals.

Nice reef Thomas!

I had a acropora stony coral tank for several years and miss it greatly. I couldn't seem to keep fish alive in it because my nighttime kalkwasser (sp) additions spiked the ph too much. I know it can be done better and I am planning to re-start it soon. Although with the 500w of metal halide needed to keep those corals happy, I'm going to have to put the tank near a window so local law enforcement doesn't suspect any illegal activity. That is the one fish that I couldn't bear to introduce, because finding it dead would be heartbreaking. Do you have any sand-sifting stars? They maintained my deep substrate beautifully.

Very nice!

Will

That's funny you mentioned the bright lights at night Will. I had a couple of old neighbors ask me what in the heck the bright lights that shined through my windows at night were from.

thanks will, its a labor of love. i actually groomed this reef just for dragonets. i have an in tank refuge where i grow cheato and grape macroalgae which doubles as a copepod and amphipod factory. no sandstars i have crushed coral substrate for this tank although soon i will be changing tanks and will have a dsb for jawfish and sandstars
