Dear Jake,
Thank you for contacting me about regulations to limit the importation and transportation of certain kinds of snakes. I appreciate that you took the time to share your views.
As you know, serious concerns have been raised about the effects of non-native constrictor snakes, especially in the Everglades National Park in Florida. These snakes are often released into the wild by pet owners who decide not to care for the animals any longer. Because these snakes have no natural predators and are killing native - and sometimes endangered - species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a rule that would ban the importation and interstate transportation of four non native constrictor snakes: the Burmese python, the yellow anaconda, and the northern and southern African pythons.
As a native Westerner familiar with invasive species problems firsthand, I know the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and respect the need for policies to protect them. However, I also understand these policies can have negative effects on responsible Americans. I will closely monitor this rule's implementation as well as future efforts to control invasive species as we strive for balanced policies that respect pet owners and healthy ecosystems.
I will continue to listen closely to what you and other Coloradans have to say about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Colorado and the nation. My job is not about merely supporting or opposing legislation; it is also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics. Warm regards,
