To those with dogs..........

DenverTom Oct 03, 2003 02:36 PM

I am thinking about getting a dog. Obviously, I wouldn't have the snakes out with the dog in the room. Here is the part I worry about. I have about a dozen snakes housed in the living room. Will the scent of the dog throw the snakes off of feed? Is there anything else that you folks have gone through that I am not thinking about?

thanks
DenverTom

I've heard cats are bad for snakes but not too much about dogs. Sorry I couldnt be too much help. I have a dog and seven cats and the snakes don't really mind them at all.

I have a bunch of snakes and two dogs that frequently visit the snake room. The smell of the dogs does not seem to affect the snakes in any way. One of the dogs is a JRT and therefore prone to being nosy / hyper (a quality that makes him great for managing escaped rodents). Any snake cages at his eye level (floor cages) are subjected to a thorough sniffing when he first enters the room. This can alarm the snakes, especially when they are in the process of eating. I wouldn’t recommend feeding snakes with dogs in the room for this reason. Make sure you house train the dogs well. There is something about the smell of a snake / snake cage that makes my dogs want to “hike a leg”.

Best of luck,
WK

Yes they are good dogs....but they are high maintenance.
Need a lot of attention and a lot of excersize.

They are active dogs with active minds that need to be involved in your day-to-day activities. Also, the official JRT party line seems to be anti-cat, -rodent, -unfamiliar dog, -possum, etc. You’ll have to keep a close eye on them around such things if you want to avoid an altercation. Otherwise, they’re great little dogs – we really enjoy ours. And, contrary to what is commonly said, they can get along quite well with little kids (mine are age 2, 4, and 6).

Well, have a great weekend all…I’m goin’ huntin’!

The only problem ive ever had was my dog got wrapped up in a light cord and pulled the light off the top of my screen.Im sure if the bulb filiment would not have busted i would have had a household of charred reptiles and one crispy dog....Paul.

My snakes don't seem to mind my dog at all. The cats are the ones that cause the trouble around here. As with any dog, just get off on the right foot through proper training from the very start and everything will be fine.
