I've had this "Peruvian" rainbow boa for about 3 years now and got her as a young adult. She was one of my brightest red breeders. All of a sudden about 6 months ago she randomly started turning rapidly darker and darker. Every shed there seems to be more black scales. Has anyone seen this before? I attempted to breed her last year but she didn't go. This year I've noticed lots of copulation and ovulation. She started turning black around fall, before I put the male in with her. I don't think this is a hormonal color change due to her being gravid, since she started before she was introduced. Any thoughts? Maybe a photonegative of "Fluffy"?

Sometimes I have seen older BRB’s “brown-out.” I don’t really know what to call it other that “brown-out,” but I have seen it happen. I don’t know how old your animal is but again, I have only seen it in older snakes.

It happens randomly with BRBs. I feel like it is definitely related to sexual maturity and reproduction, just not entirely sure how.

Unscrupulous breeders would probably start offering these babies up as het anery and claiming to have a potential anery adult. I don't really think that is the case!
