Ever Use PLAIN JELLO to Water Feeder Bugs?

SaveFerris Oct 03, 2003 02:38 PM

Couldnt someone use plain stuff to add a moisture source in the cage? Its cheaper than the store bought stuff anyway...

Yup you can use plain glycerin if you want. It gets icky pretty fast though, so you have to change it every other day.
I use polycrylamine or polymer water crystals. You can get them at craft shops in the candle department. They are the things that look like glass or ice that are used for air fresheners or candle holders. They seem expensive: $10 (cdn) for a little bag, but a tsp makes about a cup. You can make jugs and jugs with one bag. It's the same stuff used in the cricket water you find in pet stores.

I forgot to add, the best part of the polymer crystals is that they aren't "bacteria friendly" like gelatine is (i think i said glycerine in the first post oops lol)

Your chams are what they eat, so is that nasty chemical stuff even safe for them? I guess everyone would of found out by now huh?

There was a thread on the toxicity of the ingredients. I just spent 1/2 hour searching previous posts (KS needs MUCH better search options!) to no avail. I also don't think I bookmarked the links I found. The bottom line is either make your own cricket water using agar or just be sure to give them fruits and veges and they will get their water from that - that's all I do. Regardless which you choose they need to be replaced every other day so go with the food. As has been pointed out - this all goes into your cham. If I find that info I'll repost.

I guess the most obvious response to that one would be that the Jell-O would melt at room temperature, so you would end up with a gooey mess.

Just thought I'd throw it out there, since no one else mentioned it.

You have to supply fruit and veggies to crix anyway so really don't need an extra source of water. I don't bother. Makes life that much simpler.
