Raising mealworms - sizes??

spasmolytic Oct 03, 2003 02:55 PM

I ordered a case of giant mealworms from a insect farm, but they accidently sent me the small mealworms instead. (they are sending out a new one at no charge.) But now I have 1000 small mealworms that my adult geckos have little interest in.
** Are the small mealworms just younger versions of the giant mealworms, or are they different insects? If so, I was thinking I could use them to start reproducing them myself. But I don't want to reproduce these if they do not grow into the giant mealworms... Thanks

Usually "giant" mealworms are worms that have been treated so that they won't pupate and turn to beetles.

I don't like the idea of feeding these treated mealies to my animals, but I'm not even sure if I can get them around here anyways.

If you got small mealworms, they could be regular mealies, or they may have been treated and will grow without pupating, in that case you won't be able to breed them.

hope this helps

I have bought what this company classifies as "giant mealworms" from them at shows before, and they definetely go through the full life cycle of turning into beetles and all. So, I guess if these are from the same stock they should continue growing larger into "giant mealworms" and eventually pupate? thanks
