Heating question

jhm1987 Feb 20, 2012 07:50 PM

I recently bought a new stack of cages. It is made from pvc with no spacing between cages (floor to one is top to another). I believe the floors are app 3/4" thick. I've been debating on the best way to heat it. I'm not sure how well the flexwatt will work. I've considered RHPs, but I feel belly heat would be best(please correct me if I am wrong). I ran across the Kane heat mats as well; however, the majority of people say not to use ANY heat mat in the cage.

HELP!!! LOL

What heating preference do you prefer/use for a cage like this?

RHPs make wonderful heaters. I cannot think of a reason not to use them. In many cases belly heat is easier or makes more sense (a rack for example), but it does not mean belly heat is any better than radiant heat. RHPs make great sense with cages that have very thick cage floors or floors that do not conduct heat well, where belly heat does not make much sense.

You can still use Flexwatt or other thin heat mat provided your cage floor can pass heat thru. An easy way is to adhere (aluminum tape works well) the heaters under each cage. Then use felt spacers between the cages to provide the thin clearance needed. The bottom cage will need larger spacers or a heater with a larger surface area because the bottom cage tends to be cooler, or else the room floor, depending on the floor material, can suck away some heat.
