collection with RI (help)

mx318 Feb 21, 2012 12:16 AM

Hi guys,

I went in my snake room a few days ago to do a daily check as I always do, and the first snake I check on is my 2300 gram gravid mojave girl. Right as I pick her up, I hear her whezzing. my heart hit the floor. I open up her mouth and yep bubbles. This sucks she has an ri.

Now she has been with 2 males this season and after checking on the bee that was with her, I noticed the same thing with him now. The lesser thats been with her also seems fine so far, but both those males have been with 2 other females also this season. Only the majove and bee so far seem to have an RI.

After talking with my wife and deciding we cant afford to take more than 2 snakes to the vet, I decided to buy that f10 and a fogger before I take anything to the vet. It shoild be here by Friday. How they got RI, I have no idea as the snake room is keep at 88 and they are all in an ARS rake the hole 9 yards.

My question is, does the f10 work well? has anyone tried it? Is it alright to use on a gravid female? should I treat all the snakes that were in contact with the two sick ones even if they are not show signs yet? Sorry this is so long, but I am really freaking out. I just put so much into my collection this is killing me...I have stopped all breeding until I get a grip on this...Thanks for any advise

If at all possible you should quarantine those two snakes immediately. If not possible, I would raise your ambient room temp to 85 degrees, move the two snakes to the top most level(s) of your rack, increase their hot spot to lower 90's if possible, keep them on newspaper/paper, wash your hands after being in contact with them and monitor them for the next week. It's hard to say how far along the potential RI is. Some people have luck pulling their snakes through an early stage of RI and avoid having to use anti-biotics. Some don't and have to visit the vet. I'm not familiar with the fogger machine, but extra humidity couldn't hurt as long as you don't over do it and wind up with mold.

Uri is a bacteria it can also be triggered by breeding and bad husbandry and other means not saying you don't take care of them just trying help I'm treating two right now with uri the post right above is correct you need to quarantine them this can still be spread through the room as told from my vet that it's better if you can to move them to another room on newspaper and fresh water as I have done this and my two are getting better I give them a shot every day and clean there tubs I have heard the digger works but I haven't tried I just take mine on to the vet I took two snakes and he only charged me for one snake vist the medicine will treat both of them I have good luck if it starts to get worse you need to get to the vet as they can go down hill quick hope this helps

Be careful with the f10. I have killed one of mine using it. My vet said that another guy killed 3 of his using the same method. Use in moderation if your going to use it. Amikacin nebulization is the best thing to use. Some say that Amikacin is hard on the kidneys, and it is, but used moderately in the proper dilution with a nebulizer, the kidneys will be fine. I don't PERSONALLY think that anything else is better. If you find the right vet, you can take one animal in and get enough meds for the rest that need it, but developing a good rapport with a vet is crucial in this hobby!!!

Thanks guys for the advise. The f10 and fogger should arrive this Friday, so if she doesn't get any worse by then, I think i'll hold off on the vet and try the f10. If I dont see improvment within a few days of using the f10, I'm for sure getting them to the vet. I guess if the f10 doesn't work, I'll have some good stuff to clean tubs with.

Thanks again.

Alright guys,
I just got back from the vet with the snakes. They gave me injections of baytril for both snakes. 6 for the female 4 for the male.

If the female is gravid, will the injections of baytril hurt anything egg wise or her cause she might be gravid. The f10 is still coming tomorrow, but I think ill just keep it on the back burner for now, see how the baytril works.

Thank.

We just recently had to treat a boa with a really bad RI. Well, within the last year. It was terrible! He's made a full recovery, thankfully, using some of the methods that have been layed out in this thread.

The first piece of the puzzle was getting him into a warmer, super clean cage with fresh water daily. Husbandry, husbandry, husbandry! The ambient temp in our snake room sits at around 84ish, but he got a heated cage that took that to 89-90 on it's hot spot. The cage was seperated from the other snakes, of course. Always wash those hands and disinfect before and after handling each one of those sick snakes!

Next was batryl. Get yourself a good relationship with that vet of yours! You want to get extra batryl on hand, it's excellent to have for multiple snake ailments. Our vet recommended a shot every two days (I can't remember the dose). We did this with him for about three weeks, give or take. He's made a full recovery, though. No more bubbles, no wheezing. He looks and eats great now and has been that way for almost a year since the RI.

Now for those batryl doses...there are a couple of excellent references to use for treating various snake ailments, complete with weights and measurements. You can find them both at Amazon.

Whats Wrong With My Snake

The next one's 4th edition is about to be released. This book is excellent! I have the third edition and love it.

Hi this is Pat from riversidereptilebreeders.com, If you feel your females are gravid then first try to raise the temp in the cage to mid 90's...All the meds will most likely have an effect on the eggs...just my opinion. I always raise the temp first and it usually works. Good luck with this and take extra care when interacting with your other animals.
