Currently breeding Hondurans(or not)

MChap30 Feb 24, 2012 03:26 PM

I am trying to breed Honduran milksnakes for the first time. 3 weeks after warming up and a first shed by my female and the male just isn't interested.
So to start this I will try to answer the questions that I know you all may ask. Yes,I have a properly sexed pair of snakes. Yes,my snakes were brumated for a little over 2 months at temps 50-55 degrees. I have Cal-kings that were brumated with them and to put it bluntly my 2 male Cal-kings are "LAYING THE LUMBER!". Yes,my snakes are of breeding size(although opinions on this vary greatly). my male is 43" and 440g. My female is 48" and 660g. I do have more but none of them will be ready for 1-2 more years.
When I put my Kings together,it's almost instantaneous that the males are on the female. But with my Hondurans he glides alongside her for a bit. But within a few minutes they are using each other as a pillow.
I know quite a few of you guys have bred Hondurans and I am looking for advice or maybe some words of encouragement. Thanks for reading and I can't wait for your input.

Also, she has shed once and has been out of brumation for 3 weeks.

Hondurans usually breed later than most other colubrids. Most after the females second post brumation shed. I still try them every few days, earlier in the season because every now and then they will breed earlier. Don't be worried that they haven't bred yet. If not before the second shed they should be ready soon after the second.

They certainly can breed early. But most seem to require another shed or two more than your typical kings. Don't give up!

Like Randy mentioned, it can take well into April or even May for them to breed for me. The way mine are setup, I don't even think about putting them together until into the month of April. They will get the job done, just be patient. It is WAAAAY early and most haven't even thought of breeding yet.
