Ridley Ratsnake breeding tips needed

kick_baal Oct 03, 2003 04:52 PM

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a pair of Ridley Rats but I've been told that the eggs can be difficult to hatch. One source told me that the eggs will be fertile, the embryo fully developed, but fail to go the last steps to full term. Is this commonplace? Is there a trick?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
From my limited experience{1 clutch} i have experienced this.
This year i had a clutch of 18 eggs, only four hatched, the
rest were full term but dead in shell.
I know other people who have hatched without problems.
One breeder placed damp newspaper over the eggs towards their
due date, and seemed to have no problems.
I also had the same problem with Gonyosoma many years ago.
Next year i will incubate the eggs in two different containers,
one with perlite and the other in the usual vermiculite, and try
the damp newspaper idea.
I would not let this put you off ridleyi, many people produce them with no problems, and by looking at the classifieds there
appears to be no shortage.
Good luck
