Motley Genetics Question

tcdrover Feb 27, 2012 09:56 AM

What would happen if you bred a Sunglow Motley to a super hypo?

Has anyone done this?

Would there be no Motleys?

That's a great question. I would have to imagine no mots.

Sunglow Motley x Super Hypo taking the combo morph names and slang out is .......

Albino Hypo Motley x Homozygous Hypo

If the theory that Hypo and Motley reside on the same locus is correct (I've done Super Ghost x Hypo Motley het Anery and it appears to be true) then the outcome should be......

1/2 Hypo Motley het Albino
1/2 Super Hypo het Albino

So, if your question "would there be no Motleys" meant would there be no "just Motleys" then yes, every Motley would also be Hypo (and het Albino).

My brain isn't working too well today but I believe that Sunglow Motley ( Which is basically a Hypo Motley) paired to a Super Hypo
is possibly the only way to produced Hypo Motley's when breeding a Hypo Motley to something else.

That's what I thought too, but I wasn't sure.

I'm a product of the 80's though so my brain isn't all there either.

Hypo motley x hypo and hypo motley x motley will also produce hypo motley babies.

I'm not convinced that the hypo and motley genes actually form a gene pair. Mostly because nobody posts numbers from matings that could disprove the possibility that the hypo and motley gene loci are linked.

Hi Paul,

I bred a proven Super Ghost to a Hypo Motley Het Anery and got visually almost exactly what would be expected. All Hypos and Hypo Motleys with Anery mixed in....

24 total babies

5 Motley Ghosts
7 Hypo Motleys het Anery
8 Super Ghosts (and yeah clean like a super ghost should be)
4 Super Hypo het Anery (also clean like Supers should be)

Almost dead on to what would be expected in the pairing...

12 Hypo Mots
12 Super Hypos

13 Anery
11 Het Anery

Thank you, Dave.

These figures alone are insufficient to prove anything. A hundred or more is what is needed. In addition, the best mating would be hypo-motley x normal. This would eliminate any possible confusion between hypos with two hypo genes and hypos with one hypo gene. Controlling for parthenogenesis and sperm retention is needed, too.

Sorry for not replying earlier. I lost track of this thread.
